What are they? I don't want to join and then not fulfill whatever responsibilities being in a squad entails; but I don't want to give up the freedom to fly what and when I like either.
TIA

Funny shade name for a BBS account.  Molybdenum disulfide is dry organic additive used in lubricants to provide significant wear protection.  It will withstand up to 500,000 psi.  I only know this because I sell industrial lubricants for a living, lol and moly is an additive that we use in everything g we make, virtually.

I wonder which squad is losing a good pilot because this boy is shopping.

You will be judged based on the company you keep.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

some squad are very rigid and detailed. some are not. try them out and if you dont like them, quit. the idea is to fly together, not necessarily and the same plane. however if you join a very cohesive group, now you get to use your strengths and weakness's and really do some damage.

once upon a time, jg54 would fly 3X110's or P38's with bombs, 2 guys in fighters and 1 or 2 c47's. working together we could kill the ack, kill the vehicle hangers and take the base in less then 5 minutes and were almost unstoppable.

the point is it all depends on what you're looking for. find your fun and your fun group of people that are like-minded. its all about having fun!

I'm still exploring the corners of the game.

It doesn't work well with a squad.

Our squad is very laid back. There was a time when we practiced formation flying, had a sector defending plan and what not, but even then there were no strict rules. Nowadays, it's like going to a local pub to see if there's anyone there. If there's a bigger crowd of us online and we feel like it, we might even try to take bases or just wreak havoc. The main thing was and still is to have a good time with guys that have something in common. In our case that'd be language, laziness and thirst.

We're like cats because we all kinda just do whatever the hell we want, have a lot of fun, but we do work together seriously on occasion...until we lose interest and wander off to the next shiney flashing object we see!

The first 30 seconds or so of this video actually depict a 71 Sqd RAF group launch from a runway, setting out to hit a target....

 :aok

To the OP.... fly with whomever you are most comfortable being around, and who you have the most fun with. I got luckly and Batfink gave me an invite one day to IMHO the most awesome squad in the game...... But there are different strokes for different folks... just beware of that guy named DaddKev..... I'm pretty sure he's naked.

First and last criteria: Are these people with whom I'd hang out in RL?

pretty good one right there.. i've had the pleasure of meeting several of my squaddies at a squad get together out of state a few years back.. and even though I've since left the squad and would probably never join one again other than just as a chat room, I still would hang out with a few of them. (and actually have hung out with one recently)

There should be no disadvantages to joining a squad. It should be about what suits you, what makes it enjoyable to you, and being around people who share a common interest and a common taste of fun.

If there are disadvantages to joining a squad, then perhaps the squad isn't for you.
