I have a 2000 GMC 2500 SD sierra. About a year ago I had the fuel pump replaced and the car has worked fine since then. Two days ago I tried to start the car and it would try to turn over but no combustion and there for no starting. I have a remote start and tried that and it again attempted to turn over but the same result. I had the car towed to a shop and they said that they got a couple of codes off the computer that indicated the ignition switch and or that a loose / old worn key was the culprit. They ordered a new key through the dealer with out my consent and told me that it would be 600.00 bucks with the key and new ignition. He did not know that there was a remote or key less starter on the car. When I explained this to him he was kind of taken aback and said he would look into the issue further. My question is does the remote start by pass the ignition issue that he claims was the problem? If it does what is most likely the issue with it not starting. Sounds like a loose or spotty connection to the fuel pump to me.
Thanks TOE
Quick edit: The problem is intermittent...It will work fine for days and then no boom boom. Try it again in an hour and it works fine.
did the guy check basics before digging into the computer?
initial check should be:
spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse, air. those can all be accomplished in the same test.
you mentioned that it's intermittent........as of late, i've had a few crank position sensors go intermittently in gm products(they must've improved them, because gm's never used to do that). without the crank sensor, the computer doesn't know when, to begin sequencing fuel, and spark.
as far as the remote start, i
think it bypasses the security system, soley because you cannot drive the car till you've put the key in the ignition, and therefore, it's presumed safe to bypass this.
it's hard for me to believe they ordered a key/ignition switch without your ok, ESPECIALLY with the cost, AND that they don't seem to be sure.
hopefully some of this helped.......
