The Metal War - Which Side Are You On?
« on: February 06, 2013, 09:39:26 PM »
There's a few good bands out there in the metal industry, and recently some bands have decided to step into new directions. I for one am all for new experiences and new sounds, but some people are just stubborn and refuse to listen to anything but the "old stuff" and stay in the past. Some examples of bands taking new directions would be Job For a Cowboy, Whitechapel, Dimmu Borgir and (I know they're not metal) Alice in Chains. Some of you might listen to these bands, some might listen to other types of music and that's fine, we don't have to limit this to just metal, but if you have a band that you listen to and they took new directions feel free to share.

Now with that being said - Would you consider yourself to be one willing to experience the new stuff or are you one who wants to stay in the past and listen to the "good ol' days" type of music?

I listen to KSHE and am content.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Metal in and of itself hasn't really changed all that much since the 90s, certainly in intensity, which is actually something that can be said for a lot of music to an extent. I mean Dimmu Borgir is really early 90s and Alice in Chains formed in the late 80s I think. Today's metal scene consists primarily of bands that either play really bad metalcore or deathcore and bands that are solidly planted in the early 90s death, black and doom scenes. Not to say that there isn't innovation within those boundaries, but there isn't really anything going on that's as boundary pushing and totally new as those black and death metal bands were in the 90s. Even the most brutal modern bands aren't a stones throw away from someone like Napalm Death or... something in that vein. If they even get that far
The internet age ushered in a fad of retrospection really beginning in the 2000s and a significant amount... almost all even... of music has been the result of revivals, genre mashing, or some kind of nostalgic something or other, and there really haven't been people pushing and just pounding dissonance like there has been since up until... like the 90s. Nothing has gotten any more 'unlistenable' for people without the proper context since, like, Merzbow and the harsh/wall noise scene matured in the mid 90s

Although I find what's happening with music nowadays very interesting

I had to go and listen to Job for a Cowboy, I had never heard of them before.

Now people that know me comment on how ecclectic my musical tastes are. I listen to everything from classical to rock, heavy metal, country and western, indy and so on.

What I just heard then is possibly the most unadulterated crap its been my unfortunate experience to listen to. Comments on Youtube are all.about how anarchistic the people who claim to enjoy listening to this excuse for music.
Apparently on guy also enjoys the soothing tones of Feotal Death.. Give me strength.

JFAC is nowhere near being revolutionary anarchists, as the idiots on YouTube claim they are. In multiple radio interviews/interviews with different music bases they have said they aren't anarchists. They do not like the current government and are using their freedom of speech to speak out against it. If you wanna talk politics about their music then feel free to PM me.

The bassist, who is most likely the best in the metal business, works for both JFAC and Cephalic Carnage. Cephalic Carnage is a good band, slightly f--ked up sometimes but its good. There is however a difference between listenable and recognizable as Motherland has said. Death metal/black metal may not be your type of music because you cant understand what's being sung, but there is such thing as a lyrics sheet to know what you're listening to.

Of course death metal and black metal are only two types of metal. Deftones for example is good normal metal and you can understand every word being said 99% of the time. At least in metal there's a point for writing the music and lyrics unlike mainstream "rock" and "pop" these days.

:old: im old school as hell, but LOG and 5fDP are laying it down :rock

FFDP, LoG, and Hatebreed are all great metal bands. Its good to see some of the old school guys recognizing that. Its a shame that Randy from LoG is being put on trial in Czechoslovakia for a crime he didn't commit.

Heavy metal sucks.  Carry on.

If you don't like it then don't post about it in a clearly metal based thread. Sure you're allowed to have your opinion but if you say that around here you better have your flame suit on before those who think having a different opinion is bad and illegal.
