It usually means there is something setting files to read-only, or some other program is preventing the installer from creating the files.

It is not something that comes with Windows.  It would be something that has been installed after the fact.

Usually some type of security program, or it could be a virus/malware as well.  The again, it could be Vista itself.  Vista had many, many problems and the longer it ran the worse it would get.

Check if Vista has both ServicePacks installed. It's unbelievable how many people don't seem to notice the Update icon in the Taskbar... Also, you can try right clicking the installation package and run it as an administrator.

Some of us disable the windows update service as one of the first steps in trimming the fat from the operating system.  :)  I just do the check manually.

Running as admin might work.

Yep, some of us do. I have a doubt his girl isn't one of "us".  If she were, she wouldn't have Vista... ;)
