it would make it easier to survive in the tbm plus people would use it more for cv based missions

I see the logic behind the TBM with level bombing and torpedo capability, but how would you suggest modeling dive bomber formations for particularly the diveing and dropping part?

Dive/glide.  I don't recal the Kate having a bombsight is my point, and I'll bet a lunch that 9 out of 10 times a Kate hit a target with a bomb that they have to nose down.

The Kate does and I've used it to bomb SBs and VHs. I never bomb nose down in a Kate, but then I am a dick. Obviously.

The TBM can only survive by maneuvering. The gunners are just too limited and do not have enough firepower to make a difference. Attacking a formation of TBMs means 3 easy kills or two free kills and one maneuvering target. An unloaded TBM can surprise quite a few fighters with its 2*0.5 forward guns.

Having said that, there is no real reason that the TBM should not get the formation option, except for the technical difficulty of making formation T/O & land on CVs. If there is no easy solution to that issue, then it is not worth the effort to implement for just two very lightly used planes.

Ah, then it's the Val that must not have it.  Interesting, I'll have to try it out next time I'm in the mood for being a masochist (seriously, I didn't know it had the sight, now im intrigued).

The combined defensive firepower of three TBMs is greater than that of a number of other bombers currently with formation capability....   :headscratch:

The guns are still useless. Last time I flew Bostons I quickly realized how useless the turrets are. After Sandman in a 262 and another K4 killed 2 of my formation I was finally released to maneuver. The 262 was sure I was about to die and left, and I proceeded to shoot the K4 down using the two forward fixed .303s. Did not count as a kill because the K4 crashed between the trees and we were close enough to his base for it to count as a ditch. The last Boston safely slipped away and returned to base.

TBMs are fun to dogfight when unloaded. They also have a cute trick they can do with rockets that no other plane can.

The B5N2 can carry an 800kg AP bomb.  A formation of those, bombing accurately, would take out a hangar.
