AH Spit V performance
« on: February 18, 2013, 02:58:49 PM »
(from Lusche's thread, which contained a plot showing the precipitous decline in Spit V usage when it was changed):

You completely misunderstand.  There were many Spitfire "fanboys" who were upset by the change to the Spitfire Mk V.  Those of us, such as Guppy and myself, who advocated the change to the Spitfire Mk V are not Spitfire "fanboys" who always want the bestest just like the Bf109 "fanboys"  We're fans of the actual Spitfires and of the history and for that we needed a Spitfire Mk Vb from 1941 to be modeled.  I have yet to see a Bf109 fan who is interested fan of the history and not the bestest he can get.

So you're the guy that killed my beloved Spit Vc and replaced it with the anemic useless thing we have now???  I have many many Spit books and I cannot find any that give a Spit V climb performance as low as the AH Spit V (see below).  Are you sure the current Spit V matches anything historical?

Look through the documents on this page:
http://www.spitfireperformance.com/spitfire-V.html

As to why the change was needed, well, we didn't have anything for 1941 or the first half of 1942. The Spitfire Mk IX in AH has an earlier service date than the +16lbs boost Spitfire Mk Vc had, so essentially we went from the Spitfire Mk I to the Spitfire Mk IX.

We used to have:

1940: Spitfire Mk I
1941:
1942: Spitfire Mk IX
1943: Spitfire Mk V
1944: Spitfire Mk XIV

Now we have:

1940: Spitfire Mk Ia
1941: Spitfire Mk Vb
1942: Spitfire Mk IX
1943: Spitfire Mk VIII
1944: Spitfire Mk XIV, Spitfire Mk XVI

The overboosted Spitfire Mk V is not representative of a 1943 front line Spitfire.

As to why the change was needed,

And all this time I thought it was because of that one film of Lev's I remember back then where he was in a SpitV E-fighting the red universe and landed some crazy ridiculous number of kills. Like over 12, I forget exactly but it was a lot. Not only could nobody seem to gain on him--the guy just never missed a shot. Anyway, it seemed like right after that was when the neutering happened. That I recall anyway. So I'd say it was Lev's fault!  :aok :lol
