I saw a kitten in flood water and thought I'd try and save it. The bugger turned out to be feral

Brave man, flood waters almost always contain a very high level of bacteria, including solid waste that isn't able to be processed secondary to the higher water table. Worse yet, in some cases coffins and their contents can float to the surface.

I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near the water, at least drowning is a quicker more humane death.
