Squad Icon
« on: February 24, 2013, 09:17:05 AM »
In addition to the player icon showing the handle, vehicle type, range, etc., I'd like see an 8-character maximum squad ID detailing the player's unit membership. Since squads aren't limited to any one vehicle or skin, this would serve to ID an individual or group as if their colors were unique to them. This could become an option to cycle through the icon list (Normal ID, vehicle type only, Squad ID, No icon...).

So for example, I'm a member of the 91st Bomb Group (H) "Ragged Irregulars". Other players would see my squad icon stating something like: 91_BG(H). A player without any squad affiliation would have: NO_SQUAD.

No, too much clutter.

No, too much clutter.

Not more clutter than the player name or plane type...

He obviously didn't read the entire post.  :bolt:

I think it could be neat, but then again, what is the benefit? Do most people frequently cycle through icons now? Don't you already know the names of your squaddies?

No, too much clutter.

No more clutter than what is already shown. I had forgotten what the the icon view modes were since I've been out of the game for a few months, but I'm talking about the Alt + I options. There are four toggle options when you cycle through the Alt + I options: Normal Icon Mode, Plane Type Icon Mode, Friendly Only Icon, and Icons Off. I'm simply asking for a fifth option that shows the Squad ID along with the country Symbol and range. If someone doesn't want to see the squad ID, then don't toggle to it.

I do, all the time.

Don't you already know the names of your squaddies?

It's more about the other players, I'd say ...

As Lusche said, this ID's other player squad affiliation. Both friend and foe.

Ah, gotcha. I misunderstood your example as wanting to be able to see who was flying around you in your squad.

Even if the wish was granted, you'd not get a foe squad icon in the MA, just as you don't get enemy name icons.

Yeah, I guess it could indirectly out an enemy players handle if that player was a member of a small squad. Could also lead to people avoiding certain squads while ganging up on others as well. My thought was that this would serve to advertise the exploits of certain niche squads. (I.E., "Hey, that bomb raid was delivered by the AK's. they were very organized and seemed dedicated to their craft. I love bombing, maybe I'll wing with them some).

which brings up another question.. why not?

at the distance skins are distinguishable, I don't see why the squad shouldn't be known..

You think that having the name tag of an enemy pilot hovering above the plane is a good thing? Because that's what it essentially is. If you look at the rooster at anything but the immediate prime time, you will see that many squads have only one or at most two players online on non "squad-nights". Not to speak of the many players with one man squads.

Air craft had squad ID markings that enemy could read...............

There could be a debate that it is not quite the same as personal ID's

Some air craft had individual markings that enemy could read ("JJ" etc)..........

I wonder if it could be made such that the "ability for enemy to read" one's own icon was a setting that one could enable /disable.
