F6F-3
« on: March 10, 2013, 02:23:04 PM »
Why?
-"Low hanging fruit" in terms of ease of implementation.  This bird would likely see more action than the different flavors of P-40.
-Give the F6F a chance to shine as an air to air platform instead of a carrier-based bomb truck.  It could become what the 38J is to the 38L.

What would be different?
-Sexier look (IMHO) due to slightly different cowl
-Lack of A-G options (Probably turning it into a 20+ ENY aircraft)
-Cutaway aft fuselage (like P-40), better rear view
-Slightly different cockpit cage
-Slightly improved roll rate at low speeds, inferior to -5 at higher speeds
-Less armor (more pilot wounds?)
-Cooler skins (more teal paintjobs IE F4U-1 default skin)

No real difference in flight model?
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

Perhaps.  Modeling a very early -3 would mean no WEP, but lack of bomb racks would help.  Also, I think the -3 was about 300-400lbs lighter overall iirc.
All in all, it seems like a slightly better version to get caught low and slow in due to marginally better turn, rear vis and low speed roll.  I don't think most people would notice any difference below 250 KIAS where roll rate would start to suffer by a good 15 deg/sec or so.

Good website for this kind of stuff here:  http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/

Hell yes!   Also add the F4F-3 when the Wildcat gets updated.   :pray

Yes, please. The F4F-4 with the 4-gun option is NOT an F4F-3.

Isn't the FM2, without wep engaged, pretty much an F4F-3 though  :headscratch:?

+1 for the F6F-3

But I think most of you overestimate the improvement in the 6 o'clock view.

No.  The FM-2, built by General Motors/Eastern Aircraft was based on the XF4F-8 prototype.

a slightly more nimble, turnier, lighter F6F sounds like alot of fun,   just don't let greebo fly it and we should be good to go.

Kind of like what the F4U-1A did for a series of planes that already had more variants.
