So basically the real truth is the bad guys were the Rebel Force and good guys are the Empire.

Personally I have always looked at the Empire as equivalent to the US. I went to school with plenty of foreign students and yes the US is hated by every country. On the other hand we are greatly loved when our help is desperately needed.
