Some advice on my computer
« on: April 05, 2013, 07:01:49 AM »
Next week I am off to Florida to meet with the Doolittle Raiders for lunch. I'm dragging my wife and two daughters. At some point in their lives they will thank me but...

While I am on the road for several days I am taking my computer to the shop to have it cleaned up and possibly upgraded. I am not a computer-tech type. I have seen other people post information on their computer here on the boards, then they get advice on what to upgrade, etc.

Two step request. Could someone tell me how to post information on my computer here? Second, once I figure that out I would like advice on what upgrades I should consider to boost the whole AH thing.

Other than work and surfing the internet the only thing I use my computer for is smacking people around in the Fw-190A5. Life is good! I'm particularly interested in my video card.

Thanks in advance!

You can post a DxDiag report here, it'll give lots of information about your current rig.

click on start > run > type in dxdiag and hit enter...a box with several tabs will pop up on the screen. bottom right corner is an option to "save all information", click on that. you will be prompted to name the file and save it somewhere as a text file. once you save it, you can then attach the text file to a reply on this discussion.

that will give everyone the hardware information needed to give you advice...

The first section was the only one you needed. The bad news is there is very little you will be able to "upgrade" on that rig. It is very dated and any money you throw at it will not net much improvement. A new computer would be best, if you can afford it. If not, start putting money aside until you can afford it.

Fugitive, you could probably guess what I use my computer for, which is Word documents, surfing the internet AH. What is a price range I should expect and what kind of components should I ask for?

Again, thanks for the advice!

computers are a lot like cars...how fast ya wanna go? = how much you got to spend....

Fug is right that system is a dinosaur, you need to upgrade everything....

I did a newer MB... CPU.... GPU....PSU...a couple fans, for a little over 400$
more then enough to run AH not maxed but works good for me, I would say at minimum you will need to spend that, I kept my old tower and drives so that could be added price for ya...

it all comes down to what you have to spend.

Like INK said, you want a Ferrari or a Fusion?  :devil

INK gave his example, mine, I just put this system together a few months ago, new MB, drives, CPU, 8 gig of ram, 650 watt power supply, and a top of the line video card with windows 7. Cost was just under $1200. Should last me 3 years like the last one did.

I use mine for the game, as well as my art work, and watch movies on. Basically you need to get as much as you can afford is the way I look at it. You could cut some corners now to save a few bucks, but you'll end up spending it later any way. I use to upgrade a bit at a time trying to keep my rig as good as I could. I found that if I save my money and build a top of the line rig I can run it a few years no problem.... saving up for the next one.

If you post your budget, you'll get a number of suggestions on what to buy. Also, if your willing (it really isn't that hard to do) you get more bang for your buck if you build it yourself.

You could make that rig faster by upgrading the RAM, GPU and CPU (In that order and also roughly in order of cost).  Weigh what you can get against newer technology.  If the price is right it will be a short term upgrade.  If not then add a motherboard to the list and go new.

Of cousre both options depend on your PSU as that may need an upgrade too.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Last upgrade I did about a year ago ran me about 600 before case and new moniter.. Mobo, CPU, GPU and ram. Havent flowin in about a year, but with all eye candy on factory clocks I ran around 50fps. Looking back, I could have done better for the $600 i spent. Before you buy, look at price vs performance as been mentioned. Kind of bummed I spent the $600 and it still wasnt what it could be.

If you want to continue using the old computer for surfing, please ask someone to do some software upgrades. You are running Windows XP with Servicepack 2 which is out of support for several years now, running such a system for Internet makes it susceptible to malicious software attacks. Your graphics driver is 4.5 years old but I assume an update is not possible without XP Servicepack 3 (often required by newer drivers).

GPU (graphics) is OK, at least better than the CPU (that's a single-core); a 9600GT with standard clock should be comparable to today's low-end Geforce GT620 (although with double their power consumption).
