Can't See Distant Dots
« on: April 20, 2013, 10:50:47 AM »
Last night in FSO, squaddies were able to see dots in the distance far better than I.  Why?  Settings?

Does Object Detail in Graphic Detail settings help that?  I can run that slider all the way to Detail instead of the default setting since I bought a new puter.

Monitor maybe?  I've got an Acer with 1920x1080 resolution.

Thanks for your help.

Screen resolution and anti-aliasing settings are the two big factors for seeing dots further out. Anti-aliasing probably being the most noticeable.

DOH!  Maybe that's why it seems nobody gives me credit for answering posts, but when someone later in the thread says the same exact thing, they get the credit and the thanks.  ;)

Depending on your system, turning it all the way down/off may be the best thing.

I assumed more anti-aliasing would be better for seeing long distances.  Less is better?

Just did an offline test and I maxed anti-aliasing in video settings and got 60 fps offline.

So, I can do more or none, apparently.

Offline isn't really the place to test FPS for a number of reasons.

Are you only changing the in game settings? What are your video card settings for it? The video card setting can make a difference.

Anti-Aliasing gives a smoother, slightly blurred look to the edges. Full scene anti-aliasing renders each frame at a larger resolution, than scaling it down to fit the actual screen resolution. This feature can lower the frame rate by a large amount, while increasing quality by a small amount. Usually, increasing the screen resolution is a better trade-off than turning on anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing is most useful for games when a lot of extra graphics performance is available.

If your graphics card has FXAA or your using the card to override AH2 settings, it wont matter what the slider in game for anti-aliasing does.

Higher anti-aliasing will blur the dots more, thus making it harder to see the small dots in the distance until they get close enough to be more than a couple of pixels in size.

Did you ask your squaddies what resolution they are using?  I think you will find that players that use slightly lower resolution sizes will see the dots first.

I used to run my 24 inch widescreen at 1240x1024 and could see the dots first, when I ran at native,1920x1200,I would be one of the last to see the dots in the distance.

The best thing is to test it at different settings, both AA and resolution and see what works best for you! There's so many variables it's difficult to say what will work best for you, however you could try hooking up to a TV type monitor with a much larger pixel size and then you'll see the dots a long distance off!

   YMMV.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.
