My kind of .... tea?
« on: April 22, 2013, 11:56:49 AM »

"Each year the Classic Malts group put out a very limited Distillers Edition Scotch, typically one from each distillery in the group. This year each is finished in a different type of previously-used wine barrel. (Check out our review of the 2010 Distillers Edition whiskys here.)

This Cragganmore Distillers Edition 2011 is a 12 year old Speyside malt, finished in Ruby Port barrels. This is a fascinating and surprisingly complex whisky. The smoke and Port elements combine to make a really unique character  that you don’t often see in malt whiskys. It took me half a glass to figure it out: brewed tea. It’s strong on the nose, and, more importantly, evident on the finish.

The body is malty and creamy, with a lingering smokiness. Flavors tend toward more cooked and stewed fruits here. Apricots and peaches, with just a touch of grassiness. There’s also plenty of wood, and that tea-flecked finish. The balance is a touch off, tending more bitter than I’d like, but by and large, this whisky’s sheer uniqueness make up for any drawbacks."

80 proof.

I just finished a bottle of the regular Cragganmore 12 last week Arlo.  I'd be very interested in trying that port casked one.

Btw, haven't seen you since Airwarrior, cool to see an old name around.

I have to say that I live about 20 miles from Talisker distillery and very often serve the staff there. I had the privilage of trying the 55yr old Talisker Secret Stills. An amazing experience although not as amazing as I would have expected. It made me realise the truth that whisky has a lifespan and after a certain number of years aging, it stops improving. Certainly the 55yr old was flavoursome, but only in the lower half of my mouth. I got nothing on the roof of my mouth, only on my tongue and under the tongue.

Still well worth it.

By the way, has anyone tried this?

Me and my favorite bottle. Distiller's edition Talisker.

With a name like Hamish Donald Cameron you'd expect me to like whisky

I have not seen Ardbeg before, is it good?

Ahhh the good old Talisker DE! Beautiful 10yr old finished in a sherry cask! One of my favourites! That and Talisker 18!

Nothing quite has the same fire in my chest as talisker. I love the 18 also, last bottle of that went in one night with some firends and a £90 winner takes all poker game. I was planning on winning and buying a new bottle but I got knocked out in second place and won nothing.

Hey Mac, have yu ever tried Jura? I have a bottle of that currently and I can't quite make up my mind yet as to if it is mild and smooth like a glenmorangie or firey and sharp more like a peaty whisky. It's an intersting bottle

This is the one

You guys are suckers for good marketing and a XX year stamp...The clear stuff with sweet tea is so much better and well cheaper too.
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

I love the Jura. It is in the middle which is why you get a combination of flavours. Talisker is a rich and smokey malt where as Glenmorangie is a light and delicate malt. Jura lands right in the Light and delicate sections, even more so than Glenmorangie but fo some reason with Jura, the peat does come through a bit more. I always recommend it for someone who is looking to try a peaty whisky but has never tried anything peaty before.

Beautiful though! Hope you enjoy it. By the way, if you PM me your email address I have something that may be of interest to you

Edradour or Dalwhinnie for me - about as different as you can get but both are a fine dram! :aok
