A good Star Trek game?
« on: April 26, 2013, 04:29:23 AM »
Ok, so I've read the reviews for the latest Star Trek game (the one with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock).  The short answer is it is terrible.

Yet I cannot help thinking that the reason is the kinds of games that they make that is the problem.

I would love to play a Star Trek game based on a single premise.  You are the captain and this is your first command.

Basically I want this.

1.  You create your character, RPG style.   Don't base it on any existing TV or movie show.  Have your own crew and characters.

2.  Map out the ship.  I want to be able to roam the hallways of my ship and go visit every room in the ship (of course going through doors can be a way to have a loading screen, i.e. every ship quarters you go into is the same room re-dressed).

3.  Put the setting before the orginal series.  Why?  Well, I think people like the old schlock with redshirts that die and mini-skirts as formal dress.  Also, keeping with point number 2 about having a full ship to roam this ought to be small enough to cut down the work to make that ship, but still large enough to be a proper ship.

4.  Oculus Rift support.  I can't help but think that people who have tried the VR goggles say a few things.  It can be sickening to move around too fast (aka combat), but it is great for exploring.  A Star Trek game would let you see some amazing sights, but the action 'combat' part of the game can be done while your character is sitting down in a chair and just looks around at people on his bridge.

5.  Co-op play.  I would like to be able to crew the ship together with my friends.

It wouldn't even need to be a Star Trek game per-se.  I wouldn't mind an RPG where you play a ship captain of any kind.  Mass Effect comes to mind, even if they use the combat of that game from Gears of War.  I think a sci-fi game setting with you as the captain of a major space warship sent off to deal with political hot spots would be fun.

P.S.  I have been known to do some 3D model making as a hobby, and I'm currently working on a small-ish Star Trek ship, complete with internal layout in a very basic way.  I keep thinking it would be fun to actually be able to crew this ship in a game.

There is such a game:

1. Not based on any TV series or show.

2. Vehicles fully mapped and you can move out of the cockpit and into other "areas".

3. The setting is before the original series. WAY before.

4. Oculus Rift support - dont think there is .

5. Co-op play.

The only important things you dont get is an RPG character and red shirts. Try this game here:

My biggest gripe with ship to ship combat is its always been to arcade like. Too fast almost like dogfighting. I like allocating energy to weapons/shields/life support and having it take a little time to charge weapons before firing.

Id also like a big crew you could interact with individually and go everywhere on the ship. I like the idea of going out to the unknown, beaming down on planets and exploring, losing a few crew along the way.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary on the NES and Starfleet Academy on the SNES/PC have pretty much been the only TRULY good Star Trek games.

Lol, anyone else remember Secret of Vulcan Fury and the BIG deal over how it was going to be the most epic, awesome game featuring the entire original voice cast. And then the plug got pulled?

Blame DS9/Voyager/TNG Movies/New Trek. Almost all of them forget that:

1) These are BIG ships
2) They have weapons located in places OTHER than the front (I've only ever seen the Refit Enterprise's aft phasers used ONCE even though they're pretty clear on the effects model. And that was in a comic book). In fact I think when Bridge Commander came out the developers said they DELIBERATELY left those weapons off the Federation ships both to fit the game's aesthetics and for artificial balance.

Wrath of Khan STILL has the best space battles in the series, and it very much LOOKS like two big cruisers slugging it out.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Dominion Wars was excellent IMO.  It's sort of an RTS and bridge command style space combat sim in one.  With the patches and community add ons it was really the only Trek game that gave you the type of game where you managed different stations, and fought your ship from the bridge.  It's ten years old at least now, but you can still find it if you look around.

Star Trek Online is free to play now, and I haven't tried it since beta, but I've been considering giving it another go now that it's ironed out a lot of early problems.

Been playing Starfleet Command II and Orion Pirates for ages..  You can allocate power to various systems..  Weapons take time to charge/reload..
Kinda old, but I grew up on RPG(where you roll dice, that kind of roll) Star Fleet Battles (which SFC is based off of)..  So, for me, it's all I need..
All other Star Trek games have sucked..  Bridge Commander was pretty decent and even had Voice Command integrated....  That would probably be
the closest thing to what you are looking for..  You can also allocate power to various systems including shields, weapons, etc.  You command crew members
or take over the tasks yourself..  The story line sucks, but I've used some mods in the past that were pretty brought the game to another level..
Stay away from arcade-ish stuff such as Star Trek Legacy..  Total crap game that wasn't even finished and partially unplayable when they released to the public..

If you want to get away from Trek/space battles stuff, you should really check out Kerbal Space Program..
I like classy, beautiful, intelligent woman that say the "F" word a lot....

The only Star Trek game I really liked was "A Final Unity" from 1994. It still looks surprisingly good for it's age, and I might see if I can get it running again...

Ya Wrath of Khan is still my favorite too. Raw energy pumping thru the ships hulls like an old wooden ship broadside.

I had a game a long time ago called Cosmic Balance that was great. Those older games took alot more imagination but the details were all there to support it.

Heres a what it was.

Looking at it now it seems so bland but it was alot of fun to play. The demo here is horrid, but you could make anything from like a shuttle size to a dreadnought with tons of Heavy/Light phasers, photon torps, plasma torps , disrupters, missiles. Id almost always setup up fights with 4 vs 4 and make Federation cruisers against Klingon or Romulan ships.  Basically the size you chose determined the space available for all your power/shields/weapons slots. Once combat started it was all about destroying enemy shields to start inflicting internal damage reducing his available power/weapons systems, while he did the same to you. Alot of fun.

What about Star wars!  :rofl that new movie is going to be bad

Unlike the last three?  ;)

Return of the Jedi was nearly ruined by those stupid Ewoks and George Lucas' ridiculous dialogue, eg: "Would you get goin', ya pirate!"  Ugh.  The Emperor saved the whole movie.  After that, it was all down hill for the franchise.  :cry

Can't wait for the new Star Trek movie.  :x
