C202
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:08:22 AM »
Hi Guys,

Just to get somefeed back, this is my 202 skin, as a work in progress. I am beginning to appreciate Greebo's dislike for working off profiles rather than pictures, as there seems to be detail missing, i.e the serial number. Anyway any comments? (yes i've seen the tailwheel).

Looks good so far, better than your P-40's.  :aok
BTW, are you compressing your pics before uploading? They look blurry.

It is looking good FTJR. Looks like the exhaust stubs need a metal colour too. I would suggest adding some shadows behind the control surface hinge lines and inside the ram air scoop to define them better. I'm assuming the weathering like exhaust stains just isn't done yet.

My main reason for not wanting to use profiles as the primary source for a skin is that they are often inaccurate. Same thing with decal sheets, plastic kits and preserved aircraft/vehicles in museums etc. If you have at least one reasonably good WW2 photo you can at least check the other sources for errors.

Thanks guys,

Devil, no compression, sorry I cant see the blurriness, probably my eyes, certainly they getting worse these days.

Greebo, yes, a bit more to do to it yet, and I agree with the inaccuracies in the profiles, difficult to prove what is, and is not correct. Oh well can only try.

Cheers

The control surface shadows look good, but I don't like the exhaust stains. I think they should fan out much more over the rear fuselage and wing roots, fading towards the edges and rear.

That looks better FTJR. The panel lines seem a bit too faint to me now though.

To some extent its a matter of taste, but personally I'd ramp up the lines a bit more. Particularly the lines around the engine and gun covers, as well as the gear doors. These lines were proper gaps in the airframe, not just overlapped aluminium panels and should stand out more. To represent this I create a second panel line layer, erase the minor panel lines from it while leaving just the major hatch lines.

BTW the engine airscoop/air filter looks a bit blank, it should have "gills" running around its middle area.

That's better, but I'd probably make the major hatches a bit darker still.

Won't any service hatch have slightly scuffed to bare aluminum latches and screw downs? Also the side the pilot and his crew chief walk up on the wing would have wear and use lines.
