And as to the OP, it blows me away that Lusche didn't like math as a kid...
Absolutely not. Math -in school- was absolute horrific. Much to the detriment of my father, who is an amateur astronomer and as such very apt at it.
Today I know why. It was way too abstract.
In the primary school, where math teachings were still rooted in 'real life' I had good marks, but later I totally 'lost it'. That's mainly because I could (and can) never learn for learning's sake, which hampered me a lot in most subjects. Math is just particularly hard hit by that, because once you miss a few important things in algebra, you are done.
English was similar, it was simply too boring, so I couldn't focus myself in the classroom. Two minutes of "Mr. Tremblehand catches a burglar" or "Excuse me, is this the way to Picadilly Pircus?" (*yaaaaaaaawn*) and my mind went astray. Totally

Instead, I learned English from games. I was doing FRP's a lot, and all the *cool* stuff was in English. Later I was doing wargames, which also existed only as imports from the US. 'Learning' English was sooo easy all of a sudden...
