new machine not as good as i anticipated.
« on: May 06, 2013, 12:37:16 AM »
alright, bought a new box, even though my old one was doing fine.. was running mostly pegged at 60fps with everything off except detailed water... quite playable.. that was a $500 dell with an NVidia card (I think was the GT220) in it bought back in 2009..

so, I get new machine now, now a $700 dell, with an Nvidia card in it..  this should be at least twice as powerful, I'd expect.  yet, I'm still pretty much pegged at 60fps, 256 textures, only detailed water on.

I don't know if i'm just overlooking some setting, or I should just go back to building my own pc's like I used to. (I suspect the gt620 is no so good)

When you use the term "pegged at 60 fps" you do realize that 60 will be the maximum fps you will get and the maximum value is based on the monitor.

What is your fps with the default graphics setting?

60FPS is the maximum your monitor can display.  Not sure what you are expecting.

Disable the v-sync to test your frame rate, if it's that important to you to see more than 60 fps. Otherwise be happy that it's "pegged at 60". And you really should have v-sync forced on, to avoid all sorts of potential issues.

yeah, i'm getting 60fps.. but on 256 textures, and everything's off except for detailed water.

I figured i'd at least run 512, or maybe be able to turn on ground clutter with a new machine.

my point was.. 4 year old machine and brand new machine getting same performance.

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GT 620

there is part of your problem, that's a bottom of the line oem card...not intended for heavy gaming. you want to enable more eye candy and maintain frame rates, get a better video card. considering you bought a dell, you will probably have to upgrade the power supply in order to replace that card.

LOL.

OK this is weird.

Everything on, 1024 textures, 1024 shadows, ground detail 0.5 object detail halfway.

50-60 fps, usually around 55.  definitely playable and a lot more eye candy than I am used to.

sweet... You may find in heavy areas a few stutters with all on.. but there are a couple of things you can drop off that will not detract form the eye candy too much...can't remember off hand what they are... but just play around ..... and as has been said... 60 frames is native to most screens... so 55-60 is good

I would leave ground clutter off.  Ground clutter will knock your FPS in a hurry if you are near the ground on some maps.
