My younger brother carried the 249 as his primary weapon when he was in 3rd Rangers, I know he loved that thing. Fired it left handed, too, something you're apparently not suppoed to be able to do, or shouldn't.

Hey - I carried the SAW lefty too when I was in - but I was also a driver, rad op, and a field tech all at the same time (it's a Canadian Army thing).  And we also had scopes on all our MG weapons way back in the 80's when most were still using iron sights.  Guess we'd rather shoot efficiently than waste ammo. Crazy silly canucks.  :D

He only had to carry 400 rnds??? They wanted me to carry 200 on the gun 600 more in the LBV.... But I didn't think that was enough so I would slap a extra 400 still in the green sling bags and another 400 in the assault bag. I would also have each of my squadies pack 200. I never wante to run out of ammo  :devil.

I kept telling all you folks that it was Ranger in the movie BlackHawk Down carrying the SAW!  If ya ever seen Ranger, you'd swear it was the same guy. :salute Ranger old buddy :lol

All the Best...

If you're referring to Twombley, he transferred to my Army Guard unit  (C Co. 3/172 INF (MTN) NHARNG) after his active duty time.  He was gone by the time I got there, so I never met him.

In 2009 or 2010 (can't remember for sure), HQ ordered us to turn in all of our old skis and snowshoes (you can buy them at the Sportsman's Guide if you really want a pair).  As we were pulling them out of storage we found skis with Twombley's name still on them.  We mounted them on the wall in honor of his 15 minutes of fame.
