Most Epic/Memorable Sortie(s)?
« on: June 07, 2013, 10:06:37 AM »
So Latrobe's post in the Films and Screenshots thread reminded me of an awesome sortie I had many months ago.

It was one of the really small maps, the one that's basically a little island and it's always (even greater than usual) hordes of red just because it's so small. You can almost run 163's to the frontline straight off the bat.. Anyway that's not really important, the point is there was a massive red horde of both Rooks and Bishops fighting and I was bored so I flew my Dora (I was in a dora or K4 I don't remember, but I think it was a Dora) 2-3 sectors over to the fight and I see just a massive Bishop horde under me.. So I dive in kill a couple of them, nothing spectacular..but then I climb back out to see a AFK and lone rook pony a few K above all the bishops.. So I go ahead and catch up to him..What should I do? Kill him!! Right?... Naaah.. while he's AFK climbing I tuck in under his left wing and fly some close formation off of him (cuz...why not?) for probably 5 minutes or so and eventually he comes back to his screen and sees me..What would you do in his situation? Lol.. Most of the people I've done this so go into a panic stick stir and I just end up shooting them down a second after...But he didn't.. He wagged his wings...So I did the same. Shortly after a few more wing wags to make sure I wasn't going to stab him in the back he dives in on the bishop horde (which has gotten even bigger now) and I follow.. He picks off a couple of them on his first pass with some pretty good aim by the looks of it and I think to myself 'this isn't just your average pony pilot..hmm..' so anyway after his pass he ropes up almost all of the hordelings and I come through and pick off at least 2-3 on his first rope. Then as we both climb vertically away from these 20-30+ bishops I notice we're in perfect formation as I look up - My Knight 190D and his Rook P51D as we continue this vertical climb away from all of these guys.. Then again, he wags his wings and dives in and I follow, we repeat this process quite a few times.. Until one of my passes I got too keen with a spitfire when trying to get a shot and his buddies were quick to get on my 6.. I managed to shake most of them but I ended up with 2 spit16's 400-600 off my dora which (after shooting what I presume was most of their ammo :lol) end up oiling me. It's at this point I look up for the pony pilot while trying to shake these 2 but I don't see him.. Did he leave me here to die lol? Did he get shot down? Where is he? As I look back again I notice there's a third con behind me...Terrific... However, upon further inspection this third con isn't a con at all..It's the pony, and there he is shooting the wing off of 1 spit and blowing up the other spit. I wag my wings again as a thank you and a 'Ok time to go home now!' and he did the same. By the time we finished I think I had at least 8-10 kills and he must've had the same. We flew formation out of the fight, wagged our wings one last time and broke off to our respective bases.

The best part for me was probably the fact that we just killed almost everyone in this 20+ man bishop horde without ever speaking a word to each other, without knowing who each other were, without being on the same country even, and that we worked so in sync and perfectly without these things.

I had the film on my old PC, but that was all deleted when I gave it to my sister :( Sadly I totally forgot about the film until now so I didn't think to save it, I really wish I had..it was really just an awesome sortie.

That was probably my most memorable sortie and I still send a big  :salute and much respect to TomFool (he was flying the Pony as I would come to find out later)

Anyone in the Few know what happened to Tom? Hadn't seen him in ages.

Anyway let's hear some other stories, I know some of you guys that've been flying for all these years gotta have some awesome stories, too :salute

I've had sorties where I've landing 10+ kills, those are fun. The other day I landed 9 in an F6F and got the Cpt David McCampbell Achievement.

What I remember most though are not sorties but events. Like the first time I got into a stall fight in my A5 with a Spit, LA, F4U and PonyD and killed them. Different fights, but remember them.

I also remember flying a 262, making one pass on a buff formation, outright killing two of them and leaving the third in flames, soon to die.

Just the other day some noob was calling out for help, he was being chased by four or five cons. I zip in kill two, drive the rest off and then for the cherry kill a C-47 that was wise enough to up during a furball.

Or landing 8 kills in a K-4 (kind of felt slimey with that one.)

Or???

Stripping the entire fighter escort from a B-17G while flying a C.202 by baiting them into diving to attack the idiot 202 who was slowly climbing up the B-17's low six.  Killed both of the F4Us and made the P-51 run away smoking.

Killing a P-38L with a C-47 by cutting a maneuver that I knew would force him to fly into a hillside if he tried for the shot which I knew he couldn't make, he tried and died.

Not but a few days ago, heading out for a short sweep alone. It's knights and bish fighting north so that's where I point the nose. Close to target I run into a spit... Tower 4 me.   :bhead

Three more sorties later and now I am really starting to go only to find that spit for the 4th time now and ram him if I have too!

Wait, what's this.... Spit is fighting a 3v1  hmmmmmmm let's clear the spit so I can fight him. So I saddle up on 2 off his six and break them off and the spit is roping a third which I see what he is doing and go in for the kill.

2v2 now.... 2 knights me and the bish spit... More uppers off the knight field, it's about too get real!

So jug down now there is a N1K1 a 190 a 109 and a few others are still upping.... Down the jug 109 & niki the Bish Spit knocks down 3or so also and were about on fumes... Last con is a pony and at the end of the fight me and the spit are wings in formation running the pony down. I wag wings and he does the same... I notice more uppers again now that we are not on top cover at the knight base so I double back and he stays with the pony... After he knocked that pony down we made a few more kills and then we both just bug out at the same time same heading in sync with staying alive!

All I can say is typing this makes me feel the way I did in the moment and right afterwards! Faking AWSOME!

:salute wash.  As the Spit driver!

I love winging with afk planes and waiting for them to come back. They mostly wing over and start a dive or pull up sharply when they see me, but the most creative one was this guy who came back, saw me, and ever so gently pulled his throttle back. I overshot and he almost got a shot on me!  :lol Clever little dude he was!

I remember a long time ago, vtards were rolling bases. As they were finishing up a capture I looked around the map for their next possible target. I had a feeling they'd up from this base and go take the undefended base 200 miles from the one they just took. I up a 109 (forget if it was the F or G2) and head out the their base. My senses were dead on as I enter dar ring I see about 20-30 low 110s! Yippee! I spend about 5 minutes making diving passes on whoever I can line a shot up on and then roping 3 or 4 of them. I shot up so many of them that most of them just turned back to base and landed!! I made it back to base with I think 7 kills.  :devil I don't believe I have the film anymore, and it will take forever to go through my films and check.

Blacking out in a 650+ pullout in a 262 to wake up and find I got so low that I hit a tree and destroyed both engines.  I glided approximately a sector to successfully land at a base under attack from from two P47s.

My first FSO, piloting a wounded bird home for around 20 minutes with a PW and several control surfaces missing.  Blacking out on final, hearing the wheels hit the pavement coming to out of attitude for landing.  Getting the plane half lined up on the concrete again, breaking the gear as I came down again and skidding and rolling down the runway with only the cockpit still intact.  Skidding to a stop upside down laughing my bellybutton off, reaching for the keyboard to .ef and dying from the PW before I could type it in.

One of the oddest things I ever had happen was I was in a 262 and someone shot off my vstab.  Plane started to flat spin but I noticed my vertical descent rate wasn't that high, and I was basically fluttering down like a leaf.  Tried to keep the wings as level as possible and wound up skidding in and getting the ditch in the ocean near my base.

They're not 10 kill sorties (personal best is 7) but they were still fun.

Wiley.

Best sortie ever was busting a vTards/JJ's jabo mishun while they were afk climbing out while I was in a 262.  Shot down 12 of them before they knew what was going on, hit the hot pad, and got 7 more of them while they were frantically running to land their vulches :). Good da.  Although, I do miss the Candy Mountain missions Karaya used to run :)
