constant BSOD
« on: July 12, 2013, 05:19:23 PM »
Can't get to the bottom of these crashes I'm getting. I can be playing a game or the comp is idling. Happens every couple of hours or so, with no pattern and I'm struggling to find the cause. Any ideas what to look for?

give us your specs then go into bios and give us voltages. Also give us the BSOD error report at the memory dump
only a moron would use Dolby positioning in a game.

Can't get to the bottom of these crashes I'm getting. I can be playing a game or the comp is idling. Happens every couple of hours or so, with no pattern and I'm struggling to find the cause. Any ideas what to look for?

Overheating CPU?
Power supply going bad?
How old is the motherboard?  Old enough to suffer from the capacitor plague?

What is the error code that is displayed when you receive the BSOD? That can often give a clue where to start looking...

M,
Make sure the computer is "not" set to auto restart. Next BSOD, write down the code that is shown.
There is freeware called BlueScreenView. Get it, install it. This will read the dump file and give you the error code as well.

From there you can use google to try and run down something more specific.

You will find that the code may have various types of issues related to it so don't just accept the 1st thing you come too.

Could be heat, check all fans from cpu to gpu to case.

call up "cmd". type in sfc/scannow. This will run an integrity scan of OS.

RAM, memtest 86, freeware, will test ram. Ideally you test 1 ram stick at a time in the ram slot closets to cpu. Multiple passes, each stick in turn.

HDD, see if the drive manufacturer has a diagnostic disk for their product available, if so, get and test drive. Consider plugging OS drive into a different SATA port.

Driver bugs or conflicts, uninstall drivers and allow windows OS to install windows drivers. Video, audio. I used to use pci creative sound cards, they always had issues. I started using the onboard sound with mobo, that particular issue went away.

luck

Another program to try is WhoCrashed by Resplendence. It will tell you what caused the crash in case a dump has been written. If there's no dump after a crash although they are enabled, it often is a power related problem like a seriously failing PSU.
