Really good foreign films.
« on: June 12, 2013, 06:07:54 AM »
Lately, since Netflix canceled South Park, Ive been trying to elevate myself and watch foreign films. Man you wouldnt believe the quality of the foreign films on Netflix. Last Night I screened "King of Devils Island" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1332134/ . This is a 3&1/2 star movie, maybe a 4. The quality of the acting and film making is incredible. Also recomended is "The Beider/Meinhoff complex". A '70s period piece on The Red brigades and terrorism of the '70s and '80s.

Also in the same vein is "Carlos". A great film about the terrorist "Carlos" in the same period. "The Devils Helper" is a story about a guy who was forced to be a double for Saddams little chitbird kid Uday http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1270262/ . "Red Cliff" is a Chinese film about medieval Chinese warLords fighting it out. Beautifully filmed. The WW2 movie "My Way" is the only movie Ive seen about The Nomonhan Incident. Its about 2 young men, one Japanese the Other Korean, both in the IJA that got their butts licked by the Soviets in Manchuria. It has some incredible Soviet armor scenes and a fantastic scene of an i-16 attacking "well worth sitting thru alone". Not a foreign film but "Restrepo" is a great Doc about US Army para's in that crapHole called Afghanistan.

Im 1/2 deaf anyways so captions dont bother me, since I use them anyway. Amazing that these movies were sitting there all along and I just never explored them. They are well worth the time and many are very impressive. America isnt the only place they make great movies.

The good, the bad, and the wierd is just crazy wall to wall action and comedy.

The awesome spectacle is huge in scope and should not simply be watched on a 15 inch computer monitor but rather a large screen television.

Watch it with subtitles, do NOT watch it dubbed into English, it completely loses its appeal.

An even better foreign war film is Kokoda, again not sure if on Netflicks:

Or, Tai Guk Gi...a Korean war flick that is great.

The Korean one is really really badly dubbed, you need to watch the subtitled one too.

Enjoy man, these are GREAT films.
