Grass Runways

 :airplane: Several of the waring countries during WW2 had some grass aerodromes, from which large formations of fighters and bombers would takeoff at the same time! Is there any chance that one of our maps which is now in rotation, could be modified with a couple of "grass" aerodromes, from which to launch pickup missions....I just think it would be neat and give us something else to do. What do you guys think?

It's there, just hard to see because of the long grass, thanks to the sheep being kept locked up.

Still probabley need to find concrete to successfuly land on though.

Good point, but surely AH could make exceptions for grass fields!

There was suggestions of this a few months back, where you would have one or two of these each sector marked with an icon on the map that you could land  refuel/rearm and take off again, but no landing.  These little mini-fields would be locked to a nearby base, so if knights had A1 then they would get a mini-field in that sector, when you capture A1, you get that mini-base aswell.   I don't fully recall, but I do believe there was a mention of a few mannable guns at these mini-fields.. don't quote me though!

The suggestion eventually went south.  While I would have no problems with it I was wondering if others do and if so WHY?!    The problem is, they give opinions on things that don't stay on topic and divert to problematic insults and other things.  So we shall see how this thread goes  :D

I like the idea, but what if it was set up like this:

Small Field:  Dirt/Grass strips and taxi ways

Medium Fields: Marsden Matting for all runways, dirt taxiways

Large Fields: Standard concrete

Sure its purely ascetics, but I think it would add in a little immersion to AH MAs.

If im not mistaken the airfields in the WW1 area have grass With trees outlining them? Would it be possible to make small airfields in EW,MW,LW like these

Yep, I'd like to see grass/dirt strips aswell. One doesn't have to be on concrete. AFAIK the properties for landing to be succesful can be assigned to any texture-object, it doesn't matter with which colur the texture happens to be painted.

One potential problem is that they'd look a bit silly if they would be the size of the current small airfield...and they couldn't be much smaller if the purpose is to be able to use heavily loaded heavy bombers from all bases.

As said, I'd certainly would like to see unpawed smaller fields.

The coloring and the shapes, layouts/maintenance roads etc. are based on aireal photos taken by Finnish Air Force during the war.

easycors D-DAY ava one also had neat little grass take offs and vbase landing strips,  

I think where they blend into the terrain it helps improve immersion.  

so +1  

gameplay ideas,   have these un-marked on the map and let each country have 2 each,   placement the same as a CV group but on land.   Make up some rules guiding how close - how far from friendly territory and a single GV spawn from it.  Only allow planes with 50% fuel and ammo take off from them and limit the amount of aircraft able to spawn in.

I remember a Rangoon map(either for FSO or a scenario) that had small dirt runways nthe were pretty awesome

I don't think we need special hidden bases floating around maps, just would like a rework of the base terrains.  No WMaker, has an interesting point, small bases probably shouldn't be able to launch heavies with dirt strips.

If they were to limit what bomber could lift from what field, wouldn't bother me any.  I thought it odd that a heavy bomber could lift from a small field.  Lifting from a medium field I would think is pushing it as well.  While it may or may not be good for game play, I personally wouldn't mind if they did the following:

Small Field: Light Bombers only.
Medium Field: Light and Medium Bombers only.
Large Field: Light, Medium and Heavy Bombers.

But what about the following?

Small Field: Light, Medium Bombers.
Medium and Large Field: Current.



As for the grass runways, what if the ability to knock them out was added as well?  So you'd have your standard fields, but the small grass strips could be knocked out for 30 minutes?  Reason I lean a little heavy is because you'd still have the main field nearby to contend with.  Mind you this is based off the idea that they are tied to a nearby base.  As for what can support what,  I'd think the Large fields could easily support one or two.  The Medium fields could probably support one, and the small fields are on their own.  Ports could probably support one but GV bases could not, though adding a little grass strip for the Fi would be a nice little touch.  But that's just eye candy. :aok

As for what could be loaded at these grass strips, I'd think no ords, but the ability to take 100% fuel should be in.  DT's however are in the air.  I'd say no to DT's at the grass strips though.

think about this:  if you are in a mission how would you select the patch of grass that everybody should spawn in as a group?  should it be the east runway or patch of grass n of the east runway, what about 20 feet n of the east runway or 30 feet?

dont you think it would confuse the heck out of everybody?  unless of course you choose to tell everybody that you are launching somewhere between the patch of grass between the east runway and the north runway.

again hitech's saying something along the lines "what I am asking for is not really what I want" begins to make sense more and more.

I think you're over analyzing this.  I believe the op and others like myself are asking to have the runway textures changes. Something similar to what WMaker posted.
