Romanian He-111, White 20
« on: July 15, 2013, 03:47:57 PM »
My latest skin is for our new HE-111. I present 'White 20' flown by the Romanian Airforce over the Eastern Front. 'White 20' was part of Corpul 1 Grupel 5 and claimed 5 air to Air victories. This has often been disputed by my research says that all kills were confirmed. As such she had kill markings painted along her fusalage.

This is a Work in Progress. I still need to weather her and add in the Kill markings. Looking at Greebo or lyric here, any idea what colour they would be? I have photos but it is a bit hard to get the correct colour.

Also the lower markings need a bit of work. They look fine in the bmp file however show up a bit fuzzy in game.

I still need to do the bump mapping and work on the speculating of her and that is a whole new challange to me.

Its looking good so far Macleod. I'd need to see the photo to give you any suggestions WRT the kill markings' colour.

If what you did was make one big cross and then resize it, that would make it go fuzzy. Resizing tends to blur sharp lines. Personally I create all markings like that from scratch at the correct size, to make them as sharp as possible.

Here we are Greebo, it was posted in this thread. Lyric posted it. Any help here would be help.

Concerning the lower crosses. I did simply resize a cross. I took a copy of the cross from a set of decals I got on Simmerspaintshop and then resized it. I am no good drawing it and so thought it would turn out better.

Any suggestions regarding it so far Greebo? Or should I get started on weathering?

If you can create a smart filter for your cross then you can resize it without loss of detail or blurring.

its looking good.

Well after a little more research I found a very nice photo of your plane. Plus a few other reference photos you might find useful.

What colour are they? To me it looks to be more than one :headscratch: However it just maybe the base colour of the camo making the markings look different in colour. If I was to guess for the markings here I would say yellow as they seem to be a close match to the Romanian cross along the left side of the cross.
The right side?

I think though these markings in this photo would be for bombing missions done not actual air to air kills. With some of the photos of fighters that I have added these are kill markings I believe. With out any doubt are white as the noses on most Romanian aircraft at this time were all yellow. So is it possible some were done in white for air to air kills? Were bombing missions done in yellow? I don't know at this point.  The best part is in this photo you can see the number 1 on the yellow band on the fuselage. :aok

Maybe just take 5 of those markings that are on the profile of this plane & make them white?

Or join this forum and ask as it is very informative.
The answer may already be in here I have not looked as of yet.

PS. Based off of the photo I would sat the spinners are most likely another colour to what you have now.

Very nice job so far though.  :aok

I'd suggest redoing the markings before moving on to weathering. My way of doing it would be to use the transfers you have pasted on as a guide. This way there is no real art involved, you are just tracing the markings you have. After creating one new layer for each colour, draw the blue lines, the yellow background, the red circles and the white outlines on these seperate layers. It is much easier to edit them this way. Use non-aliased lines for the vertical and horizontal lines and aliased ones for the 45 degree lines and for drawing the circle. Once one of each size marking has been made, merge the markings layers and then copy and paste each of the merged markings to the other side of the skin.

I'd go with yellow for the angled lines on the fuselage.

A couple of other things I'd suggest working on before starting the weathering:

Make a heavy panel lines layer. This is all the lines that represent access panels, bay doors and joint fairings. These should be more visible than the lines that represent the joins between the panels of the rivetted skin. To do this make a copy of your panel lines layer, increase its opacity  to 100% and change it to a bright colour, say red. Now delete all those panel lines that are just skin join lines. You should end up with just the gear doors, bomb bay doors, flaps, fairings etc. in red. Now turn these panel lines black again and reduce the layer's opacity to about what you have for the current layer. This will double up the heavy lines only.

The rudder, elevator and ailerons hinge lines could do with some 3D shading. This is hard to explain in text but I'll give it a go. Create a new layer and draw 3 pixel wide black lines along each of the control surfaces' hinge lines. Next apply a 2 pixel gaussian blur to the whole layer. You will now have fuzzy black lines that extend both front and rear of the hinge lines. You need to get rid of the portion of the lines that are ahead of the hinge line. This is done by either selecting the areas with a box tool and pressing delete, or if the lines are angled, then carefully deleting the front portion with the eraser tool. What you should end up with is lines with a sharp heavy side against the hinge line that fade back to nothing in a few pixels onto the movable control surface. The ends of the lines should also be cropped so they end sharply at the ends of the control surfaces. Then reduce the layer's opacity to taste.

Lyric: Concerning the kill markings. They were definetly air to air victories, that was why they were so adamant about putting the markings on. I have had them refered to as 'Tricolour markings' on another forum so that may explain why they look different colours. If this is the case, we can assume that Yellow and White are two of the colours. Any guesses on the third?

Regarding the spinners, I'm not going to lie. I had blanked them. I was too busy focusing on the main body of the skin that I forgot about them. Thanks for pointing them out.

Thanks for the photos. They are a godsend. I only have one or two proper photos of this particular 111 and it seems that a lot of the differant bombers in the squadron were painted differently. There seems to be a rough base, but alot of license was given as to how they were painted, including the yellow Ailerons. No other bombers in the squadron appear to have these except White 20. I especially love the weathering picture from the underside, that's given me a lot if inspiration.

Greebo: Thanks for the tips regarding the panels and also regarding the weathering. I'll get on and do that next. I'll do the crosses first and then move on and do that.
I do have a good explaination of the 3d panels, however I was not sure if that would have been overdoing it a bit. Also one of the main things is that I have been mentioning this skin a lot recently and so thought I would just eventually get Screenshots up to be criticised and so I did not do any of the weathering.

As I mentioned in the 'Skins Under Construction' thread, my time is very limited and so this is a very slow process for me. Do not expect to see more screen shots next week. It might be a month or two before I get some visable work done on her as I only get about an hour a month. But it is being worked on, and it will make it into the game, it might just take a long time though.

I have what you need :aok.

The photo I posted of #20 has a number of areas that are obscured by the wing & this seems to be where the kill markings are located. I did find a picture with a kill marking on a Romanian HE-111 & it is not a stripe but in fact an aircraft shape. Also the picture shows that the stripes are in fact 3 colours that make up a single stripe. I would say they are painted the same as the tail markings of blue yellow red. These stripes are the number of sorties the plane has flown & on fighters this is for the number of ground attack missions flown only painted in white.

The colour of the actual kill marking though?

At best guess I would say off white as it seems to be lighter than the yellow portion of the mission stripes below it. I made the kill marking larger there maybe some detail on the marking? What it is I can't say I added a enlarged picture as well of it.

Add 5 in a row & you got what you need. :rock

Edit:
PS. Just found another image of the same photo above from another source.

Lyric, Feel very proud of yourself.

You have single handedly disproved all other pieces of evidence about this feature and provided photographs to back it up! That is great work! And all before your morning coffee?

This now poses another major question. How many sorties did she fly? I have profiles of her with the lines all the way down her fuselage, but I don't think I have heard an exact number.

This has just changed my entire out look on the finished product in my head (Lets face it, all skinners have a mental image of the finished plane).

Thank you was fun digging about for that.
Found quite a lot of new stuff for the Romanians while looking. Number of stripes  :headscratch: at best guess from what is visible when I take the actual photo of #20 I get 38? Hard to say for sure who knows what else is hidden by the wing & also how many missions flown after this photo was taken.

So maybe the rest of the skinners can take a guess as well & see what they come up with.

Hi MacLeod,

Just thought I would bump this thread to see how things are coming along.  It would be great to have this skin in the game.

Also, the last image in Lyric's first post of this thread looks like another He-111 skin that would be fun to have in the game.  Maybe one of the other skinners could pick it up if you don't have time for it.

Thanks!
