Monocoque or Simi-Monocoque
« on: July 18, 2013, 02:20:06 PM »
:airplane: Most of the aircraft in Aces High were constructed using the "simi-monocoque" design principals but there are some items in Aces High which used "monocoque" designed principals, which are they? What do most of you use everyday in your private life which is "monocoque" constructed?

I don't ride a vespa every day, that would be one and a car would be another.

There aren't actually many pure monocoque designs. As soon as you add additional structure inside the skin it becomes semi-monocoque. Most modern unibody cars are semi-monocoque for example. Of course it's more useful to think of a graduation scale than a simple division.

Arguably the fuselage of our Mosquitos (but not the wings) are the most monocoque aeroplane bits we have. Found a great video the other day with lots of construction footage:

They actually used hand saws to cut the fuselage to fit the wings!   Not bad for some canoe makers.

My second favourite Hermann Goering quote:

"It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I'm going to buy a British radio set - then at least I'll own something that has always worked".

Boiled eggs?

:airplane: You are close! An egg is a perfect example of a object which is "Monocoque" construction. The only item in Aces High, which is "Monocoque" constructed that we use about every day is a BOMB!

That, clearly, is not true..... And for obvious reasons, person who replied today to a 13 year old post thinking it was today's.
