sound issue
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:19:10 PM »
For whatever reason, my onboard RealTek HD sound does not work in AH without freezing up the pc. The screen freezes and a horrible sound begins, forcing me to reboot. PC will not BSOD.
I have had this with driver ver 2.71, 2.70 and 2.69. I just uninstall the realtek drivers and software and use the ms driver for onboard sound. Since I'm not an audiophile, this works for me.
Thought I'd mention this in case others have had similar crashes and use the realtek onboard sound. It reminds when I would Creative sound cards.

The default Microsoft driver will give problems in a game.

Check Options->Game Sounds and make sure the game is using the correct devices for all its audio.

I did, the ms default driver only one that does not freeze game. It is not without issues tho. Last night it took a couple of mo's before it would play game sounds and vox.

I have tried 3 different RealTek drivers. They all freeze up puter.

you know what the make and model of your mobo and video card are?

sounds like you have a driver conflict, i've seen it happen with the newer video cards that have an onboard sound chip...especially the amd video cards.

Hey G,
Yuppers, I built the machine. I use the onboard sound because sound cards would not work properly. Something about putting all the pci-e buss traffic on the same interrupt. PCI-e use irq 16, industry standard for video cards. If I used a sound card, it too would be on 16, been there done that.
But MS seems to use that irq in a lot of other instances. If I new how to do it properly, I would reassign some irq's to give the video cards exclusive use of irq 16, but alas.....................

BTW, it is only AH that has the issue. PC works fine in all other respects.
See pc specs in sig.

rather odd that a sound card would take irq16 when historically it was irq5 by default and 7 or 10 as an alternative. must be an os setting or specific to the the chipset controller on that mobo.

that mobo is using the realtek alc888 and is it safe to assume you're getting the drivers from gigabyte's website? what happens when you install driver version 5.10.0.6642 from gigabytes website?

I had stopped using a sound card on my last build. That's an XP machine.

That mobo was a Stryker Extreme by ASUS. Had it RMA'ed 4 times. This was when the bad capacitors were rampant. Anyways the Creative sound card used irq 16??????????????? I dumped the card and used mobo sound. It solved the issue then. Since then I replaced the ASUS mobo with a comparable Gigabyte mobo. Its my backup/bench machine. Use it to service my SSD's and other little crap.

To be honest I never really tried a sound card on this build, went straight to mobo sound. When I 1st flew AH, year and a half no issues. Now 3 years later, took a year off, the latest drivers a problem. Then no windows 7 SP1, older RealTek HD audio drivers. Now using SP1 and latest RealTek HD drivers??????????????
I tried drivers from Realtek site and from Gigabyte site, no difference.

There can be conflicts if you install the Nvidia HD sound drivers with the video card package, and not use them but I did not install them.

I just flew for over an hour using MS drivers, perfectly fine????????????????????? All sounds were crystal clear. Just gonna stick with MS drivers.

Flew for over 3 hours tonight, Saturday, using MS drivers for my Realtek HD audio sound. ZERO freezes.
I must conclude that the drivers I listed before are incompatible with AH. Maybe I should just be using drivers from 4 years ago when my hardware was current. But since I'm tired of running it down, MS drivers are good enough for moi.

An update and maybe a reason for this issue.

Skuzzy I know you stated that using MS drivers is not a good idea.

So I flew with MS drivers for quite awhile without this issue. Last week I was flying with MS and locked up again. Googling brought up a question about DEP and older game software. So I disabled DEP where AH is concerned. Went back to flying MS drivers, seemed good to go. So I loaded in the Realtek drivers and have flown a couple of 4 hour sessions with them. No crash. In recent past, this would have been improbable with Realtek drivers, they always caused a lock up. I will post up the next time I crash, if I crash using the Realtek drivers.

Sound response is so much better with the boards drivers vs MS's. I want to keep them......................... ..........

Could DEP have been the culprit?

There's been quite a bunch of problems with DEP in XP over the years. Some of them have been fixed by the third party, some by Microsoft and some by bypassing the programs involved like you did. A general fix would have been impossible to make due to several reasons: XP can't use DEP in the hardware level unlike the newer Windows OS'es, the problems only arise with certain unidentifiable hardware combinations, not every identical hardware has the same level and order of installed updates, the sunspot activity has been different while compiling a certain computer etc.

Simple answer to your question
Could DEP have been the culprit?

is: YES

To clarify.
This is on a w7 64 bit OS, with hardware that is DEP capable.
I do not recall ever having the issue with XP, never flew AH with XP. But I have been flying with w7 since before FA died. Only ever had the error in AH since coming back to it this year 2013, began AH after FA stopped in 2010.

Thanks for the clarification. The only time any OS has been mentioned in this thread was

I would suggest you look in Device Manager (under System Devices) for "High Definition Audio" and disable any occurrences, if there are any.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.
