Jagd tanks
« on: July 28, 2013, 05:01:29 PM »
The new tanks have created  'flared tempers' thus far. The problem is that you have to keep the engines running to turn the tanks for a better view of the ground. This is causing people with engines turned off (so they can hear enemy tanks) to fuss at the people with Jagd tanks.  The low cost of the Jagd 70 and the Jagdpanther make them real attractive for useon the field, where normally a turret tank would be used in real war. Just making a statement that tempers are flaring over this. Why can't we get along? :headscratch:

So far I have turned off my Jagdpanthers engine almost as often as I would have in any conventional tank. You do not need to have it running ALL the time.

This. Find a good spot, shut down, and only worry about the guys in your field of fire.

In fact leaving it running is an extremely bad idea.

Leaving the engine running not only bugs the person next to you , but also helps the enemy locate you . Once they locate you , they locate the friendlies next to you. This is the same for the new tanks as well. I understand the reason for having the engine on so you can get into a fight area, so here is what I do. I will find an area along the perimeter of the fighting and stay off to the side of friendlies.that way I can run my engine a little bit more.

Being a tanker for a number of years, I nearly never turn mine off. I often fight from a turret down position and then pull up to fire then back down again. Even in flat terrain in the real world you can find a number of places to do this - unlike our very boring AH terrain. It can still be done though, and if I turn it off I just die. Of course I don't up tanks that survive hits either, so mobility is survival.

I've tanked a bunch since they came out and haven't run into this.  The only time I need it running constant in the heat of a shoot out when there are usually engines running all over.  I do have to pass a few shots where starting up to get a solution would give me away, but its a small matter.

leaving your engine running really depends on where you decide to stop and take a look around. You can't hear them if you don't shut down. Success in Tanks is allot like Retail. It's about location location location. :D :D :D

Whenever I tank I usually leave my engine running because I like to be mobile. Shoot and kill some tanks and then find a new position. I'll peak over some cover from the commander position and if I see a tank I'll poke my gun around the cover and shoot at them. If I start taking firing or I'm confronted with a tank that I will not penetrate with my gun, then I don't want to be wasting time starting up my engine, I want to move... NOW.

I'm not a gv person so I'm probably doing it all wrong and you gv experts are laughing at me right now, aren't you!  :P

That's more like reasonable real world tactics.

The tank game in AH is (outside pure spawnfests) more like submarine warfare. A short dash, then sitting still in silence, using your 'sensors' to scan the area... he who moves first will be heard first and dies. I'm just waiting for the first tank to go below the thermocline...  :noid

I'm all for HTC reducing the range of audible sounds of tracks and engines of enemy gv's to almost nil.  Seriously.  Pulling your AFV up to a hedgerow and shutting down "listening" for other tanks is rather gamey, it is in the same league as flying low in a plane and shutting down your engine to hear gv's on the ground.  Does anyone really think the pilot would be able to hear jack squat over the wind noise???

Your binocs and an allied "eye in the sky" should be the only other things available to detect enemy gv's that are perhaps 500, 1000, or 3000 yards of yards out.

Ask a tank crew member just how ofter they shut down in a combat situation.  See what they say.

I don't mind the engine running part, what I would like to see is independent track braking.  The Jagd's are nice but it would be great if they didn't try to push forward or back every time you pivot in place.
