A Surprise!
« on: March 07, 2001, 02:58:00 AM »
Load the plane with 50% fuel, lightest ammo loadout.  Place it on the runway, apply WEP
and mark time until it reaches 5k.  Which plane reaches this altitude quickest?

BIG HINT: It's not the G10.

Which plane reaches 10k first? 15k?  20k?  25k?

If the bish and knits will promise not to furball at 24, I'll post the answer here later.

From a standing start on the runway, the Me 109G-10 IS the fastest to 5,000ft with 50% fuel and 1x20mm...

10-25k the G-10 will be first too.

Curly, ya blew it by shooting me sooo many times n that P38 of yours...

So nicely that I decided to try it out myself... Next time, I'll ask my "M** in Law" to sit on a wing before I decide to turn...

When I was younger I hated going to weddings.
It seemed that all of my aunts and the grandmotherly types used to  come up to me, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next."

They stopped that stuff after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

Juzz stated:
"From a standing start on the runway, the Me 109G-10 IS the fastest to 5,000ft with 50% fuel and 1x20mm"

Juzz, I tested the G10 first with 1 30mm plus the 2 mgs and then with 1 20mm and the 2 mgs.  I did not carry the gondola. There was no difference in climbrate.  Perhaps it's due to the additional 20mm ammo?  I dunno.

Anyway, here is the answer.  BTW, each time was arrived at by using an inexpensive stop watch.  Tests were repeated and I took the mode as the correct answer.

Test parameters: 50% fuel, lightest possible gun loadout.  For the p38, that's 800 rounds of 50 cal rather than 2000 rounds.
      5k   10k   15k   20k
p38  1:22  2:41  4:07  5:46
g10  1:24  2:29  3:41  4:59
la5  1:25  2:47  4:25  6:13
yak  1:36  3:01  4:33  6:17

All planes were under wep (except the yak).
So, the P38 beats all planes to 5k and the G10 beats everything to 10k, 15k, 20k and 25k.

The N1K while speedy, lags considerably behind the above rockets.

Of interest -- the Spit9 beats all planes (except the g10) from 10k to 15k.  As I recall, it took the g10 1:12 seconds to get from 10 to 15k; it takes the spit9 1:19 seconds.

Didn't you test .plane 14?

1:34 2:50 4:13 5:34

Btw, I get these numbers for a 50%/200rpg P-38L:
1:39 2:58 4:24 6:05

As you can see, the split times are the same, but I can't get it to 5k as quickly as you for some reason... how do you do it?

Juzz, I've repeated the test for the p38 4 times.  Each time I got the same number.
WEP, 50% fuel, light gun load out.  Is it possible you accidentally had a drop tank or something?

One last guess, Juzz.  I'm sitting on the runway of a field at sea level.  I make sure the throttle is engaged, I fire off the engine, engage wep and start the clock.  I leave alt-x engaged.
