Data Transfer Rates.
« on: August 06, 2013, 11:34:45 AM »
Guessing this is the best forum for this......

I haven't been playing for a few years...I broke both of my arms..so...a little tough to use a twist rudder joystick.

Anywho...to make a short story long....it's time to get back into it...but where I am now I can't get unlimited usage on the ol' internet.

So....Can anyone give me a heads up on how much data is transferred?

It depends on what is around you but the data rate is very low, about 10K bits per sec to 40K bits per sec.  In other words, a 56K modem dialup connection can easily handle the rate.

(Note I gave bits per second not bytes- divide by 8 for bytes per second.)

I can't give you any exact numbers, but not much data will be transferred since AH can still be played on a 28.8 modem according to http://www.hitechcreations.com/Help-Section/Getting-Started/Aces-High-Min-Req.html. More important than speed is the stability of your connection.

I feel like I'm in a 3rd world country.....
we live in Alliston, ontario.....as the crow flies, 35 miles north of Toronto airport.  There's a major Honda manufacturing/assembly plant here

Anywho.....we are too far away from a 'hub' to get a DSL line.

we can get satelite service...but the lag won't do it.

There's line of site 'wi-fi' but the price for unlimited is astronomical....plus they want to charge us for installation.  There's one provider here that we could hook up with....if we cut down a dozen trees.....

So, at this time...the most reasonable alternative was with Rogers communications....basically.. internet through a cell phone. Our rates are based on 5, 10 or 20 Gb a month....

So that's why I'm wondering.....how much is going to be crunched through whilst I play?

I have known others with such a service. They were able to play.

side note: Verizon is already stating that they will have only cellular type service, in those areas where they have decided that running hard lines, are cost prohibitive.
ie: certain areas being rebuilt due to Sandy. Soon only military and super rich will have hard lines.

It's not the service that I'm concerned about.....
It's how much of the service (due to download limits) that I am going to use.

You don't have a land line phone? You can play AH with a 56k modem.

Satellite is a very bad choice- the lag due to the speed of light and the round trip distance to geostationary satellites is terrible.

For lag, yes.  And for cost and data limits, satellite is not so hot either.

NEVER use satellite for gaming.

Also, the problem isn't so much bandwidth required to play, but rather how long is it going to take (and how much of your quota) to download the game update it all to the most recent patch, and get all the maps/skins.

THAT will kill your data usage more than actually playing a fully-installed-and-updated game.

Maybe I should have said data transfer volume.....
Updates and such I can work around....I drive transports and can get unlimited out on the road a t wi-fi hotspots at truckstops.

I can play w of tanks without much problem...running a lag of about 100ms.

But I mean...isn't anyone out there who can tell me what the upload/download volume is in an hour of play? Aye! there's the rub!
