I swore I saw a few snipes last night

As someone who's led a lot of snipe hunts in my youth, it's always amazed me how people think they're mythical, non-existent critters...

I've shot them during our open season, and have even had various falcons chase them (they're very fast and maneuverable though, quite difficult for most falcons to catch).

we lived in a place called waterville Vally in The NH Mountains....

The wife...our Oldest Daughter and myself were standing on the wrap around porch....right at dusk so the shadows were very deep......our daughter was 5 at the time....we are just enjoying the fresh air....out of nowhere....we heard this sound....(I just asked my wife to describe it...she says it was a "Horrific snarl")  it happened again and my daughter freaks and runs in the house crying.......it happened again and at this point...the wife is freaking out....I was just lets say...very adrenaline rushing...hard core.....I had no guns but some very combat ready swords...I almost went and got one    I never heard a sound like this before.....and it sent chills up the spine....a crazy sound....

the light from the setting sun was in the front of the house... and out of the shadows....stepped.....a small fox....no lie....she (I am guessing here)  was advertizing her mating readiness. it was most definitely the fox I could see her making the sounds....

if I never saw the fox I would think some crazy beast or werewolf was alive in NH.

as far as not believing or believing in Sasquatch....my mind is open to it...I have seen what looked very much like a foot print...my brother swears he saw one....I think they could very well be intelligent enough to avoid us....

the Patterson film is very convincing....the baby in the trees...the accounts of seeing them from people who are not "kooks"

also once again there are many who say God does not exist.     


I think it is much better to have an open mind then a closed one.

I hear foxes vocalizing quite frequently. 

I live on a 400 acre Boy Scout camp, and we have red and grey foxes, as well as coyotes, and an occasional wolf has even been known to pass through.  The noises the wolves and coyotes make are pretty "expected" and although they make my wife, kids and dogs nervous, they're not really all that alarming, and you KNOW what you're hearing.

Foxes?  Those are an entirely different story...

Hearing a fox vocalize when you know they're there and are likely to make some noise (like when I'm out predator calling at night) is enough to make a grown man come perilously close to soiling his armor.

Hearing one vocalize when you least expect it is enough to make the hair on your head, neck, and shoulders stand on end.  I've had grown men out predator calling with me that just plain wouldn't go out again after hearing one.

Foxes sound like some almost-human, demon-like critter of at least 400#.  Or sometimes a woman screaming for help.  Or some type of banshee-critter.  They sound B  A  D  !

Worse yet, the dang things will actually APPROACH you while vocalizing!  Or more accurately, will get closer between vocalizations.  The effect is that you first hear one, freeze in your tracks, and wonder "WHAT THE ^&%$ WAS THAT!!!).  Of course, you wonder that silently to yourself for two reasons...  First, you sure don't want to draw its attention to you, and second, you don't want anyone you're with to hear the fear in your voice.  Then you just listen to the silence and wonder what to do next...  Are you seriously contemplating leaving the night woods just because you heard something?  Are you actually scared of something you just heard??  Could it be someone playing tricks on you in the dark???

Then, it calls again!  But it's closer now!  And no way is it human! 

But it sounds "almost" human!  A demon?  Sasquatch?  What in the blazes IS it? 

A small dog-like critter will never enter your mind...  If it does, because someone's told you of a similar experience, it's immediately dismissed...  This sound/instance is WAY WORSE than anything you can ever a lil' dog-like, almost cat-like critter could make.  This is BAD!

Hearing one while you're out in the woods at night, just once, is enough to ingrain it forever in your head.  You won't forget it!  I can EASILY see where people that hear these things think they're hearing sasquatch.

Surfinn's story at the beginning of the thread just screams out at me as "fox".  It's almost word-for-word the same as I've experienced several times, and I'd even speculate it's a grey fox rather than a red that's to blame.

Foxes are also interesting in that in almost every case, people who spend TONS of time in the woods hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, etc, and who know "everything there is to know about the woods and what's in them" won't have a clue about what a fox sounds (or can sound) like.  And because of the variety of their calls, even if they do "know" what a fox sounds like, they may only be familiar with the more dog-like barks, etc.  This, IMO, sets fox up to be an ideal "sasquatch".

As someone who's done a fair share of fox trapping, I know that grey fox in particular are attracted to campsites.  In particular, they're attracted to the fire ring, and I've had them come in on me twice at night while I've been tending a fire.  They'll come right in to within a few yards of you, and give out that blasted scream.  They're not overly concerned with your presence, and are attracted by the scent of the smoke/coals.  I used to bed my traps in an old campfire, make a small burn on top of it, and place some scent there.  The fox is attracted to the site by the fire scar, and digs near the scent...

Most of the time when we hear them around here, they only call once, and then are silent for @ thirty seconds before calling again.  That gives you some time between calls to stand there and wonder about it, lol...

When I said that you could feel it in your chest that was not a exaggeration. Have you ever been close to thunder and felt the sound wave pass through you. It was a lot like that. Except longer.

The closest sound I've herd to what we experienced was a recording of a unknown vocalization that was attributed to BF. It was differant from that vocalization as it sounded a lot more aggressive.

Destination truth did a investigation in the Honey Island swamp and caught two roars. They implied but did not say the vocalization came from a pig. If it was then it was the strangest damn pig I've ever herd

They were ripped apart . Like something just pulled them apart . Now we are talking 150 pound gun ho dog's that are bad to the bone .
I have spent weeks at a time deep in the wood's looking for my dog's before I had tracking collar's and never herd anything out of the norm . I had some kind of cat tracking me back in the 80's I could here him scream and every time he be closer . Only time I have been scared in the wood's but not that scared . I had my trusty Browning 270 with me and a 9mm on my side . So I climbed a tree and waited for him to show but never seen or heard him again .
 Now I live right next to a huge forest . I meant my house is 50 feet from the wood's of a endless bottom and never hear anything out of the norm .

in 2009 i was on a UKC hunt near Longville, La. We turned out the Walkers at about 9:30 p.m. and waited for them to strike (get on a trail) which didn't take long. We started heading into the woods and after about 5 min the dogs when quiet real quick..... all of 5 of them. We keep moving in to locate them when they blazed past us at full run headed back towards the trucks. Standing there scratching our heads wondering what the hell was going on we were overcome but the most musky stench i ever smelled followed by something very close breathing real heavy and making a growling type noise I've never heard and at 45 years old I've heard everything in these parts. the oldest fella on the hunt, about 70, said it was a Skunk Ape and we need to get our arse back to the trucks.i wanted to go in and try to see it but the old man let me know it'd be a long walk back to Longville for me if I did. Anybody that coon hunts knows the only way to get a hound off a hot trail and back to the truck is on a leash (dragging him most of the way). When we got back to the trucks all the dogs were hiding in their kennels except for one that was hiding under the toolbox.

I wasn't there, so of course I don't know.

I will tell you though that a fox call in real life can be ridiculously loud, especially close up.  I've also never heard a 20lb fox, most of ours are in the 8-12lb range.  The weight doesn't seem to matter much though, as I've never heard my 50# GSH pointer or 15# JRT make any sounds as loud as I've heard from a fox.

I doubt you can get your speakers (with those recordings) to give an equivalent volume to a live fox.

I've always found the "skunk ape" thing interesting though, because of the noise and smell factors (with an obvious lack of visual evidence to back it up).  Not only do fox make some very loud, odd noises, they also can smell extremely strong, and almost exactly like a skunk.  They don't always smell like that, but it gets really strong closer to breeding season.  The first few fox I trapped that smelled like that I thought had actually gotten sprayed by a skunk.  It took me a while to realize it was the fox itself that smelled like that.

I've also picked up that odor simply while walking through the woods.  Very similar to the way you can smell if elk (especially if wallows are nearby) or deer are in the area, but more obvious.

Well, the last time I heard it, I was taking the trash out to the dumpster behind my maintenance shed.  It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, at around 9pm on an October night.

I made it about 1/2 way to the dumpster (about 75 yards from my doorstep), and heard it call from about 250 yards behind the dumpster, up in one of our campsites that has some "haunted history".  I froze, and heard it repeated twice within a minute or so.

It sounded either like a demon, or maybe a woman screaming for help, or maybe someone hiding up there trying to scare me.  But since there was no reason for me to be out there, it seemed unlikely to be the later...

So, I did what any self-respecting husband/father would do.  I dropped my sack of trash in the driveway, and ran back into the house acting like I had no idea what it was to get my wife and son (daughter was at her friends).

They thought I was pulling their leg, and basically came outside with me to prove it.  Of course, the fox called a few more times...

My wife grew up in a hunting family, and has spent countless hours in the woods hunting and camping.  She had no idea what it was, and was not at all happy about it.

My son (14) spent the next two weeks scuffing his feet noisily across the driveway anytime he was outside at dusk or later.  He figured that way he wouldn't have to hear it again.

I eventually spilled the beans, but of course they wouldn't believe it was a lil' ol' fox that could make that kind of noise, with that much volume, so I had to prove it to them by sharing the recording.

My son was up in that campsite in February and heard it again (within 75 yards) just at dusk.  He actually saw the fox pass between some bushes across the site from him, but he said it still just about scared the pants off of him!

Best mouse catchers you have ever seen, and put cats to shame in that department. Like someone said above they don't have a lot of fear of humans. A coyote will take off as soon as he knows you are around, unless he is in hot pursuit of something.

Coyotes in an urban area lose a lot of fear of people. I love to hear them too, but Owls are my favorite. They are another creature that makes some strange loud sounds other than a hoot most people hear.
