Cap, IIRC ford tried an independent rearend in the Tbird in the late 80's. I think it was a BMW design but I could be wrong. I drove both the turbo and V8 versions, which were fox platforms. While they didn't make big power the turbo version was much better,I suspect because of the reduced weight over the front.

Personally I think they need to move the motor back and use an IRS,close to a 50/50 weight as they can get, then the stangs will be "interesting"!

they did. it sucked. it sucked big time. it sucked so bad, that saying it sucked is an understatement.

they're apparently trying it again. supposedly the 2015 is supposed to be irs. i'm almost suspecting it's gonna be based on an aston, as some of fords little cars have aston looking noses.......

nosir.

 homestead raceway.

randy pobst took a zl around laguna, then a shelby. the shelby outlapped the zl there too.

it's about 50-50, on roadcourses that the shelby can take the zl. it handles well enough(although not as well as the zl) that if it's not in front, all its driver needs is a good straight run to get out front...then it handles well enough to stay there.....but admittedly it needs that straight run.

what will be really interesting, is when they go to independent rear.

and i'm not bashing the chevys.....i like em all, as all of you guys should know already.

Yes, I remember that. I actually posted that vid a while back when one of these discussions came up. IIRC Pobst commented that the Stang was faster than the Camaro... for about 1-2 laps. Then the Stang started suffering bad from brake fade, and the ZL1 was rock solid, lap after lap. If it was a whole race and not a single lap shoot-out for best time, The ZL1 would pass the Mustang on lap 3 or 4, and never look back.

I'm still trying to figure out WTF Skorp was talking about with "circuits." He talking about electrical crap? Hmmm.... maybe when he finishes learning to drive, he'll enlighten us.  :rofl

lincoln and ford are not the same.

Mercury and Ford are a lot closer.....Lincoln is a lux brand, and different across the model lines.

Like Caddy is GM but not a chevy in different clothes.

trucks are a different story..... there is no Ford version of a Lincoln Town Car, but the LTD and Mercury Marquis are the same animal, just one has stripes and the other spots.

Also, see Yukon Denali, Tahoe, Escalade... different flavors of the same basic thing.

Ford trucks rock. They saved the Ford corp. Unfortunately they are so good , and popular, you cant find very good deals on them. I ended up buying a Nissan Titan. Its been a good truck, and powerful, but Nissan blows as a company. I'd have rather had a F-150.

i've no clue there either. i thinnk he's just planting the hook.

pobst said a couple things about the stang. yet revan racing ran 20 minute stints down at homestead, with no problems. they were walking the zl in lap after lap, till the zl had a heatsoak problem, lost power, then it was all over. this was a zl with a bigger intercooler if i recall.

to be honest, i'm still trying to figure out the brake fade thing on the stangs, 'cause they have the same basic brake system as the zl, 'cept they weigh about 400# less. there should be no brake fade....unless they're still using dot3 brake fluid, then it may be getting too hot........

mercury was always more luxury oriented than ford. look at the couger/mustang. everyone used to think those were the same. they weren't. even the fox bodied ones had differences.

That's not quite true, mercs are gone now but for a long time the only difference between a ford and merc were the details, both cars were built on the same line. Ford faimount/merc future were exactly the same car except some trim or other such nonsense.

  Maveric/comet  pinto/bobcat  mustang/capri   CrownVic,Marquis and some towncars same thing.

You need to go back to the early 60's late 50's to find a real difference, there are a few exceptions of course but platform sharing has been going on for a long time now.

Few realize the new smaller GM's are really opels that are rebadged and assembled here.

  YMMV.

I don't understand what's not quite true... we're saying the same thing.

The last GM North America model based on an Opel that I can recall was the Cadillac Catera from the late '90's. You're thinking Holden, GM's subsidiary in Australia. The Pontiac GTO was a rebadged Holden, and IIRC the Sigma platform (FE RWD V8 sedan) that is the basis for a lot of the current and near future GM sedan (including the Caddy CTS and new Chevy SS) originated in Australia.

I love the Aussie V8 Supercar Series.... nothing like LS powered Holden sedans with sequential gearboxes on a roadcourse....pushing a bunch of Fords out of the way   :t  ..... NASCAR could learn something from the Aussies.
