High explosive ammo that works
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:18:12 PM »
As tested online the HE does not work against troops. HE was designed to kill infantry and cause massive casualties! I wish it would work like that against troops online.

HE was designed to work against soft armored targets actually, not troops. Firing a modern day HEAT round at troops in the open does not work that well because it focuses its explosive power in one direction, now beehive is a different matter :)

i wouldn't expect HEAT to be highly effective against troops but a general purpose HE or HEI round would do the trick.

@ Paladin3: No, HE was designed to work against infantry. Tanks were designed to support infantry against infantry. The original concept was for tanks to be armored machinegun nests designed to wade into infantry and tear them to pieces. As the machineguns came off the guns began to carry all manner of anti-personnel weapons, like white phosphorous, canister, and HE. You maybe thinking of HEAT rounds like gyrene said, Paladine3.

Took out half a squad of troops with a single 75mm round from a B-25H the other night as they were about to enter the map room.  I believe the 75mm cannon on the B-25H uses the same round as the 75mm found on other US vehicles.

I sure could have sworn I took out multiple infantry w/ HE shells from an M18 a few tours ago.  I was racing to a vehicle base to try and save it, I got within distance to see the infantry running but no icon yet, I slammed on the brakes and hurled 3-4 HE shells in to their midst.  I'd say 4-5 of them were taken out, before I was sent back to the tower.

Times have moved on, modern rounds would be pretty effective against organic targets but they are not anti personnel per se, they are simply a big lump of fast metal. APFSDS and HEAT/HESH have limited anti personnel effect due to their specific roles and constricted/concentrated blast radius

The only cannon I've had trouble killing troops with is the Yak9T's 37mm. I don't actually know if it's HE or not, but I have never killed any troops with it. You have to literally hit them with that gun to kill them.

It's AP, that's why it can kill tanks. P39 37mm Is HE and can't kill tanks but near miss will kill troops and guns

If HE kills planes by a near miss on the runway in front of them (and it does - I had a beautiful camp spot the other night just wacking people by laying in a 75mm HE shell as they spawned on the runway) - it should also kill troops.

It doesn't seem to. I have had two chances recently and the troops needed MG fire, because the HE didn't work. Pick airplanes out of the air, yes. Troops, no.

Problem with Aces high is HE rounds only penetrate to kill a tank, if we added something like the KV-2 or SU-152, a HE round can cause serious damage to a tank if hit (blow turret off the ring, etc)

However in Aces high a close hit would not damage a tank, you'd actually have to hit and penetrate it.

Um... didn't this discussion happen multiple times already???  The Yak-9T's 37mm uses HE rounds, NOT armor piercing. The IL-2's 37mm uses AP round, not HE.

This can be verified when using the Yak-9T to take down the ack on a field.  You don't need to hit directly, you can simply fire one round and hit near the gun to make it go "puuf".  With the IL-2, you need to hit directly.  HE = splash damage.  AP = no splash damage.
