This guy does give a positive review, but he only seems to have a superficial knowledge of the game.  It seems like he only played for a week before writing his review.

Speaking as someone who has written quite a few reviews in the past, that's not necessarily such a bad thing.

A lack of familiarity makes objectivity easier, though a lack of in-depth knowledge and/or intricate details can leave gaps in a review.  It also makes scoops harder to get.    As long as the writer knows flight sims in general – and the competition that a particular product faces – he thus has a good basis for comparative value judgements and I don't think a lack of months of experience is harmful.

That said, I think any general articles about Aces High are a good thing to let readers know about it and try the game for themselves.  I would hasten to add that much of this sort of coverage isn't aimed at players who already very aware of the mechanics of the game and likely have pre-set opinions, but to present it to people who aren't familiar with it from their own experiences or have only heard of it in passing.

All journalism (even Web based writing, if we can call it journalism) is not about research papers, but about presenting facts in a palatable manner to people whom aren't already aware of them.  Of course, it's very important to have an analytical and unbiased article, but readers who are already hardened players of AH aren't likely to find anything new is such a piece… they'll either find support for their own convictions or take exception to it.  It's the flight simmers that have never tried an online game, or a new gamer that has never even played a flight sim that will be the most intrigued and to whom it is really aimed.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Cheers,
phaetn

I think its allways a good idea for a review to have some new screen shots. Esp since it plays to one of HTCs big strengths, the fact that the plane base is growing dynamically.
The flavour of the reveiw was very good and would probably be very effective at drawing in players.

In actuality, we were given a 2 week account for the use of creating this review. The fellow who wrote it tried very hard to get his views on the game known. The writer played a LOT of AH in those two weeks, enough that he felt he had the general feel of the game, enough so to write a fairly comprehensive review. I hope you enjoyed reading it.

In a review that big, you're gonna make a couple of mistakes, no big deal. Overall, it seems like the guy who did the review is hooked on the game now. That speaks volumes.

I'm not surprised he described it as 'ultra-realistic' - did you take a look at the other flight sims they had recently reviewed?

Heroes of the 357th and the original Tornado!

Great basis for comparison, eh?

We review games based on their own merits, and in the case of older titles, we may compare them to other games of their day. Comparing Tornado to Aces High would be unfair for several reasons (graphics, multiplayer, FM, etc.). I personally love Tornado, however, and still play it to this day.

Our goal at GA-Sim is to cover every simulation ever made equally, which means we'll eventually review everything, from Sublogic's original Flight Simulator to IL-2 and beyond. This is why we have reviews of Heroes of the 357th and Tornado. I hope this explains everything.

Something I don't understand:

There isn’t any offline solo capability. This would have been really nice for analog modem users who just want to learn more about flying the aircraft.

Is this what you were refering to?  I mean, the lack of AI when off-line is definately an issue.. but you can play off-line.

I didn't play the game, so I really can't comment. I'll pass this on to the author of the review and see if he thinks a revision is in order, or if his opinion stands. Thanks for the update.

I thought it was very good.  Obviously, the guy loves the game.  I hope he keeps on flying with us.

cc to what SF said. And it's a really a good review because it gives us all an idea of what a new comer to AH thinks about it.

I just read that as the lack of a stand alone game, Deja.  Sure there is an offline option, but it's not a game, more of a testing/training area.
