The improvements in PC software won't.

Graphics issues are only hardware based :old:

My $3000 PC both plays AH and ROF at 60 fsp based on hardware not software :old:

At full graphics settings, to honest I am to old and decrepit to notice what some of the effects do.

Yea? Try running some of older Windows XP or 95 games. Most of them are ok, but some won't even run or with extremely bad performance. As new OS are put out, all the older games are going to become obsolete. Though I hope HTC can put out a graphics update before the next OS is released (hmm ~3 more years?).

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

What exactly is a graphics engine, and what does it do?

Is the AcesHigh Terrain Editor a graphics engine?

Is flight modeling done with these graphics engines or is there different software that works in concert with a graphic engine to make a plane feel light or heavy for example?

Chalenge's little army man has the ability to walk. Is the walking motion controlled by a separate software?

I want to know what it takes to make a game like this........ (besides a ton of education).

Lets say I was designing PONG. The graphics engine would just make the court, ball and paddle....right? But what makes the ball and paddle move, and what decides the speed these items move?

In a nutshell, it puts the pretty pictures on your screen. I creates your view by determining which objects you can see and which not, then putting them on your screen accordingly.

No, but it's of course using one ;)

Generally, no. There are some overlaps or hybrids, some games have  "game engine" that is responsible both for graphics and for world interaction (for example movement), but that is a complex matter and someone wiht more experience will surely explain it in more detail

Perdue, I don't see any harm here. Especially from rejects like coombz, and Festurd.

What I get out of all of this is how much resistance there is to change, good change, by the very people that want change. Onageristic stupefaction is incurable in the ignorant souls of this board.

Just ask yourself how much good the changes in game play that some of the people here have suggested really made? Game play has gone down hill. Fester himself has abandoned ship. He claims it's because of graphics. It's not because of graphics.

...and that is your biggest problem. You read only what you WANT to read in a post, it doesn't matter what was written there at all to you. Fester, while coming across as an arrogant a s s is an artist, and a perfectionist on top of that. His contributions to the game are as near "perfect" as he can get them. His complaint is that while your "walking soldier" is cute, it's not what is needed in the game. How cool is is seeing walking soldiers from 15k ?  :huh

The changes most are talking about are over all eye candy. Clouds that look and react like clouds, mountains that are not pointy, lighting effects as in flying in the shadow of a mountain looks very different than flying in the sun shine. The same can be said for the "up-close" stuff like trees with a pool of shadows under them that stay the same circle no matter what time of day it is, and the same goes for the hills and gullies.

Change for the sake of change isn't going to help anything. Bringing in a new "walking soldier" isn't going to bring in new players, but cloud and lighting effects could because its something that is "in your face" all the time in the game. If players want to help and HTC is willing to accept the help.... with out copy write issues coming up  :noid I'm all for it. But if HTC is set on keeping all work in house then I hope they say something and save some people a lot of work.

"Homeworld" will not run on windows 7 because its software was poo, even though it was awesome at the time, AH is consonantly being developed to meet the needs of a varied clientele who have different capacity PC's.

It might be a idea to inform HTC about this problem they might not know about it. :)

But then again being a business man I guess he is aware of it, or maybe he will move in to the haberdashery business which is directly influenced by OS changes  :)

I'm curious as to why HTC still haven't implemented any post effects like HDR, bloom or ambient occlusion, all of which can be toggled on and off by the user. Both HDR and bloom are less resource intensive than cube map reflections and would offer a substantial gain in "eye candy". Other than that, the biggest eye sores are most definitely the terrain texture details, the terrain mesh (pyramid shaped hills) and clouds.

bad engine is bad

In a nutshell, it puts the pretty pictures on your screen. I creates your view by determining which objects you can see and which not, then putting them on your screen accordingly.

Not to mention how the objects are rendered, what kind of shaders are used, and so forth. To be frank, AH could have a better engine developed, but due to the huge player limit, one wouldn't be able to improve it very much without the need for higher system requirements.

Unless some sound scaling methods are used, of course. Something like "Very Low" having super-low polygon counts on objects, and "Ultra", which for the purpose of this discussion could look more like FSX. Closer to it, anyway.

well speaking from a very little bit of experience working with a few different "game engines"

I've worked with "Cryengine"  "UDK" "unity" and of course "Blender" ive also worked with the Skyrim Creation Kit(which is more like the AH Terran Editor than any of them)
while the first 3 are true game engines and in one of them you can actually do minor 3d modeling...Blender is a 3d Modeling program that has a Game engine....
there are many different game engines and I only worked with the ones I could get for free....

even though someone who thinks he knows what he is talking about says Blender wont get you anywhere....   Blender is by far better then all those Game engines I mentioned...it does it all....image texturing....3D modeling...and a game engine....that takes almost NO scripting....

anyways..... I have been working on putting a game together....it is an insane amount of work and brain power, I have zero education when it comes to Scripting.....it is all about "if" statements.....its much more then that though.....

since I started this I have gained a new appreciation for HTC and crew....

it truly is a very difficult task to make a full complete game, and with as lo as a number of employes HTC has.....I am more so then ever impressed at what they have done with Aces High.....trust me when I say, there is nothing I haven't been able to do that I put my mind to(except playing an instrument :bhead)....but this making a game stuff is a LOT of work and time.....

I will finish mine someday :rofl :rofl  I may be a hundred and ten.....when it happens..... :old:

I do wish I knew someone who scripted because it would make it a hell of a lot easier.  :pray

Sure ink. It will work. If you want to start making your own games go for it. Work for another company with Blender? Good luck! In fact, why not put your resume out there right now? Since you have so much experience and everything? It has to be better than working as a tattoo 'artist.' Without a degree? Good luck.

Then when you finish you will still have gotten no where, because you have to actually spend time learning how to design games. Game design is a whole new ball of wax on top of everything else.

@Fugi: I'm hoping it's a lot more than walking soldiers. Really, that's what you think?

What I see here is a lot of peripheral knowledge, which is to say misinformation. You can spend a lot of time spinning your wheels trying to get somewhere, but until you take the steps to gain actual industry standard training from those experienced in the industry you are wasting your time. I got into this to learn video editing and a few graphic design techniques. The classes we take push you to become an Adobe Certified Professional, and then to learn the film industry standards for modeling and animation. Games are not my focus, but if I can offer HTC some free work then I will.

Compared to the time constraints of school work a few 'walking soldiers' are childsplay.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

 :rofl

I try to be nice...and you go and do the typical challenge insult.....

I know what it is...its the same with people in the art world and tattoo world.....

they don't understand how someone like me who comes from the streets and has ZERO education in the arts can do what I do....jealousy is bad dude, you wont ever be happy with yourself, if you cant look at others without being envious.

Rather than actually prepare you for it. Which is what Full Sail, DeVry, and their ilk are all about. Big talk, but little in the way of concrete education. Though you know, that fits you perfectly.

Ink has more talent in his fingertips than you have in your entire being, kid.

Chalenge got his wife from an internet site for a fee, so it really shouldn't be a surprise that he then looked at FSU to get some quals ;d
