A job I’m proud of. & How I made MAJOR wife points…
« on: September 19, 2013, 01:05:06 PM »
This is how I’ve spent the last ten days.
I repainted my wife’s craft room… And then she suggested new carpeting. I can’t say I blame her, that nasty blue shag has been there since we moved in. Well, we found out that there was hardwood under there!

I pulled the carpet up and discovered that the padding had deteriorated and left spots of a tar like substance everywhere.

I tried cleaning one of the spots and it just liquefied and spread into the wood… I noticed when I was sweeping the room that the spots attracted the dust and this made them a littler easier to get up with a putty knife. So I spread kitty litter on the floor and drug my feet around. I then scraped the floor with a putty knife. I did this 3 times! (At this point I asked my wife if I could decorate the room as a saloon & tell people that the floor looks this way as a result of a hundred years of tobacco spit. Scientist have not developed a device capable of measuring how quickly she replied, “No”.)

Okay, here is the floor after drum sanding, and before I did the edges.

And the final product! - Except for reinstalling the quarter-round on the baseboards. I need to let the finish harden for two more days before I put the furniture back in. It was a lot of work, but I’m proud of the result, and as the title of this post states… I made MAJOR wife points!

CHEERS!

(very nice job on the floor)

Outstanding Goaly! For the life of me I can't understand why some folks cover up beautiful hardwood floors. I'd much rather see a nice stained wood grain than a carpeted floor or painted wood trim. Not only does it look better, IMO it adds to the value of your home.
Lighten up Francis

Honestly, I actually am a bored house husband. I retired (for the first time) in June after 32 years at the same job. I took the summer off and I’m painting a few rooms and getting a few other chores done… I just started submitting job applications. I guess I’m way too young for a rocking chair.

I agree with uptown....nothing like a well done hardwood floor. Nice job goaly.

Must have been a hell of a lot of dust from the sanding though.

i disagree...100 years worth of wife points won't make up for a single indiscretion, especially if it's with one of her relatives or friends...  :bolt:

Thanks for the compliments. It was the first time I’ve ever redone a hardwood floor.

The dust was not that bad, but I still wore a mask when sanding. The sander came with a collection bag, and I had fans in both windows facing outdoors and they blew a lot of dust out of the room.

The best part is the total cost, including sander rental and all of the other supplies was under $250. I could not have put the cheapest carpet down for twice that amount.

Nice Job...

You wouldn't believe how many houses I go into and "Real" hard wood floors are under something some times 2-3 somethings :lol. People cover them exactly because they don't know or want to take the time and money to rent the two sanders and do a good job like you have done. Most times there is a spot that needs stitching, from a chair that sat in the same place and rubbed, water damage, or rearranging the house, looks like you got lucky  :) What finish did you use?

I used semi gloss Minwax polyurethane for floors, and a lambs wool applicator. It went very smooth.

Cool the water based doesn't yellow the oil based will a bit. Some folks will still use Varnish... I like Epifanes its really tough Marine Varnish.
