Pilot wounds
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:20:52 PM »
I thought about this after flying in the last frame of BoB.

I wish that when you bailed out of your plane with a PW that it wouldn't magically heal itself.  It would make sure that you towered or died instead of running all over with a .45 cal.  Not that I mind people running around with .45's but let them do it if they don't have a PW.

The reason I thought of this is in BoB there's rescue operations.  It would add another level of realism if you bailed out with a PW and had to worry about if you'd be rescued soon enough or not.  SAR ops would have to decide who to rescue first or if it sounded like someone might be too far gone to even attempt rescue.  For this particular scenario it would add a great deal more immersion on several levels and I don't see a real downside to carrying it into the MA's.

Of course the next level is to allow rescue in all arenas.  I'd envision landing a goon or storch or driving a Jeep, M-3 or Skd next to a downed pilot then typing .rescue <game ID> at which point that player is transported to his tower.  The only thing this would affect is that you might get a safe bail instead of a capture.  It wouldn't affect kills already recorded.  It would also make SAR in the scenario much easier on the CM's.

It sounds good, but there are a lot of things I'd put before this as an addition to the game (some form of scaling of map size or game-able map area with number in arena, adding more planes, fixing the numerous bugs and usability problems with film viewer that would make publicizing the game easier, adding some features to the CM commands, and others would be a higher priority for me).

Rescue has always been one of my favorite elements of BoB, providing an incentive to both stay alive personally to get rescued, and have the other downed pilots work to get everyone home.

I like it.   :aok

Actually, I didn't realize it did this, I thought they retained the damage. Good to know.

Before that we need to have a proper built-in rescue instead of relying of ROC to spot us.

Seriously, 10 year since the first event: http://cppcms.com/kadesh/ that introduced S&R to AH, there should be support for this.

N.B.: Probably if all CM team would write a letter to HTC with request of ".rescue GameID" command the HTC would take it into consideration?

I like the idea :aok, but also I agree with Brooke.  Hopefully in the future something like this can be implemented.

I love running around with the pistol but I do think the pilot wound blackouts/dying should continue after bailing.

It would be very helpful.  SAR is quite demanding in terms of the CM support required.  And why not have it in MA too?

I'm not a fan of search and rescue. Scenario rules are already too complicated and sar complicates things further. Secondly, the way it works now incorporates magical and instantaneous teleportation, and I've always been opposed to the itroduction of magic into the game, instant vehicle repair, see-through clipboards etc. in real life pilots would land and cram their downed buddy into the cockpit and bring them home, I would like to see that enabled. But bailing at sea and being back in a plane 10 minutes later is poop. If a boat picks them up, takes them to shore where a plane or vehicle picks them up and returns them to a base, that would be fine by me. Also, having the extra workload of sar in a scenario in which players get two lives and pilot attrition isn't a victory factor doesn't make much sense to me. The kind folks volunteering to do search and rescue, we could make better use of their time employing them as AA gunners.

SAR would be fantastic, ground-based and maritime. It's about player experience, being able to pick-up a squad member, that would be priceless. I would happily fly Catalina 24/7 and pick ppl up, if the game allowed it.

Let's also consider the PW as a shark attractant   :O  A fin sighting just might shorten the time in the water, at least in the form of a bobbing pilot....Bring on the Tiger sharks!!!   :rofl
