I believe the joke is in reference to the thing 4chan did where they had posted some fairly official looking sites that said iOS7 would make your iPhone waterproof to troll those that don't know any better.

Ditto.  On the one hand, the idea of posting something like the iphone thing is humorous to me because of the obviousness of a software upgrade having an effect on the capabilities of your hardware.  Kind of like the idea of a 'Used motor oil makes outstanding lawn fertilizer!' billboard.

On the other hand, it's an awfully mean thing to do with the intent of actually getting people to believe it and try it.
