You don't have to damage it, you just need to hit it.

I know this is not true. Several times I have seen an impact on a plane I am shooting and then seen someone else finish it and not get an assist.

How do you know they are your bullet hits and not Shifty's from 1.5k away?

as far as I know(could be wrong) I was under the understanding you can only see your hit sprites.
