Those are all fantastic, but Red October is even better. In my opinion, Clancy's best is Without Remorse, that novel is a masterpiece.

Yep I read without remorse in one sitting. I was disappointed to find his other books weren't as captivating though. Without remorse was the first of his books I read and the other books I've read from him so far haven't matched it. Hunt for Red October I haven't read because I'm afraid the movie would spoil it. If you liked Without remorse, try 'Birds of Prey' by Wilbur Smith.

IMO - Hunt for the Red Oktober, Patriot Games, and Red Storm Rising were his best works

Agreed.  And it was the only one that wasn't about Jack Ryan.

My favorites still are "Patriot Games" and "Red Storm Rising."  Like so many successful authors, Clancy started to get formulaic and ran out of new and interesting ideas.  "Red Rabbit" is a fine example.

Not true, SSN and one other novel in 2011 weren't in the Jack Ryan universe either, so far as his "fiction" non netforce/op center books go.  Without Remorse was still set in the "Ryan" universe, it just never featured him as a character, just his father briefly, and of course, John Clark and some other CIA officials.

Red Storm Rising was co written by Larry Bond, whose Red Phoenix is another excellent book from the 80's about WW3/Cold War/Etc.

Almost everyone says that Without Remorse is their favorite, and in the JR universe I can't argue, it was by far the best story of them all.  Executive orders was up there as well.

The Battle of Alfeld was rated one of the best military action sequences in any novel by the military book club and a couple other places with regards to Red Storm Rising.  It sort of broke the mold, in that the Soviets actually WON a battle (gasp) in a western fiction book.

He will be missed.

I personally have mixed feelings about him.  I've read and own the entire Jack Ryan and John Clark series and think they are great (hated the movies though) as well as Red Storm Rising and several others like some of the Shadow Ops and Net Force series which are all right.

BUT...    One day in the thrift store (where I shop for cheap novels) I spotted 3 books with Clancy on the spine, series was called Splinter Cell, 'new Clancy series' I thought, so I picked them up.  Later I notice they were "created by Tom Clancy" written by some guy I'd never heard of.  Long story short they sucked... bad...  I                                   mean worse than anything I read in a long time, couldn't even finish one of them.

I definitely lost some respect for Clancy that day, seemed like later in his career he was willing to sell his name out to anything, regardless of quality.

Quite a shock. He was one of my favorites. The man knew how to craft a story.

Red Storm Rising is the book I always turn to when I just don't feel like reading anything else I have, I never liked the movies they made but the same can be said about most movies made from books.

I second that. Hunt for Red October is my close second.  Got to meet the man once, and a book signing.
