For a Frame that I didn't kill anything, it sure was fun!
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:00:07 AM »
Morning all!

{The Gun Fighters} flew, we found, and from what I saw, everyone that dove on the NOE bombers died. :(

We were tasked with defending A-61, and were flying a mix of KI-43's and A6M5's. Our objective was to spot bombers, and engage fighters. It is said that no plan survives first contact, and this one was characteristic.

After the squad dropped I stayed high to mix it up with a P-39 I saw. I figured he was a JABO, and I wanted to get him to pickle his bomb so I could get a “Mission-Kill”. He ran from me flat out, and I struggled to catch up to him in my little KI-43. As I chased he must have been screaming for friends, because one came in and started to make passes on me. Then it became two of his friends that were trying to scrub me off his six.  I jinked, held my alt, and we mixed it up at 22K for about 2 minutes before he called in even more friends! At one point I was 7, or even 8 to 1; the hard way.  They could not turn with me, and I could not chase them down. It was a stale mate. I put it out on range where the bad guys were, and at what alt, and the cavalry came to my rescue in the form of the JG54.
Once they came in high, the balance of power tipped, and the JG54th started knocking ‘em down before I could even turn my nose about to get a guns solution. So it was that I squirted about 102 rounds – mostly to induce bad guys to break off a friendly – and connected with no one.

A special <S> to Raynos who was engaged 3 V 1 the hard way, on the deck, and with his forgotten drop tank still attached. He survived long enough to realize he was carrying the drop, shed the weight, and started killing things (You steely eyed killer!). After seeing a couple of their buddies go down under the guns of this lone-wolf, they lost their nerve and ran for home.

<S> incrypt! was fun, happy to help out. i let half my squad drop, to go after low bombers, and kept the other half in reserve. we stayed high, and then then got word that all the bomber, or most of them, where dead.

we then heard your calls, and b-lined it to you. the boys did a great job, and we had fun also. i hope we can do it again!

I very much enjoyed the frame as well. Once the fight started I was in about 30 minutes of straight action before I was shot down. Love the PTO and I look forward to the following frames.

How can you "LOVE" the PTO?

We (JG11) made a pass on B-24's in ZEKE's.....  YEA and then we had 20+ P-38's all over us flown by the 56th  :salute They were very good in that situation and all I could think about as I  turned left then right then dived and then climbed and after minutes of that I took a second for a snap shot at a passing Lightning and then I was a TORCH.... All I could think about was DAMN I WISH I HAD A FW-190!

15 P-38s Ditto, the only reason I'm bringing it up is so nobody accuses us of taking too many. ;)
Zekes aside you guys fought a great fight as usual and bagged quite a few of us.  :salute

Was there another squad there with you Shifty? I saw 2 formations, yours had 15, the other had 4-6.
Either Way it was a fun fight. If I had my A6M2 I might have had more then the one scalp.  :D

I know Dantoo's Squad that was in the area in P-40s. They were heavily engaged just South of the target when we arrived.
In usual Dantoo fashion they had things wrapped up quickly so we kept moving North where we encountered JG-11 and friends.
I wasn't aware of other P-38s. I think I had the same mental image going on with the Zekes that Ditto did on the Lightnings,
I could have sworn there was 100 of them.  :D I noticed JG-11 was flying A6M3s I saw the Tainan Kokutai skin on a couple
when I had time to notice such things. I also saw some A6M5s in the mix as well which I assume were AKs maybe? I did
notice that the A6Ms were doing a great job of dancing just out of gun solutions and quickly reversing into their attackers
on the merge. If a P-38 slowed down or attempted to turn with one of you he was dead meat. A couple of our guys made
the mistake of getting a bit too casual in that swarm of Zekes and payed for it.

Ditto what you experianced Friday was probably the exact feeling I've had on many Med FSOs. I'm flying in a SpitV unit and
we get jumped on by JG-11 in FW-190s. Sure we can outturn them but we keep gettting pushed down into a little bait ball
like a school of herring .The 190s are like sharks blasting through the school and the ball gets smaller every pass. We've all been there
bud.  ;)

We got jumped after that encounter on the way home by a mix of Zekes Ki-43s and at least one Ki-61 losing a couple more. It was
a tense fun night.  :salute

a little bait ball

:lol  I like that!  We call it The Punchbowl...but I like Bait Ball too.  :D

At one point during the fight I said on vox...'Wish we were in these Lightnings tonight'... as I knew we were in The Punchbowl... and like I noted in another thread...I tried everything in my book of tricks but you guys weren't letting us reverse the situation at all.  Shifty you have flown with me enough to know pretty much exactly how I approach these missions...and how much I hate to get whooped like that.  I second guess and relive the mission many times on Saturdays...looking for...what I did wrong...what I could have/should have done...like I am sure a lot of the kommanders here do as well.

Frankly...I found we did pretty much everything right...and simply got defeated by patience, skill, and disciplined teamwork.  As a squad we go into every fight with the mindset that we will win it.  And so it was Frame 1 as well.  I was very happy with the cohesion shown by my boys during the fight.  Perhaps it was because how hairy it was and we knew death was only a moment away for anyone making even the smallest mistake, but they kept concentrated and focused the whole time.  All the way down from 20 to the deck I was sure we could handle you guys once we got down.  We do it all the time...bring the enemy to where we can have our way with them...and then flip the table over.  There was no flipping to be had however...and I recall Hammer on vox during the fight...'We're in trouble.  These guys are flying well.'

And so it was...you guys kept us in the bait ball nicely...and most of my guys who went down, did so while making offensive maneuvers.  A clear and certain sign of wingmanship from the foemen.

In the tower afterwards when I apologized to the boys for getting them killed, I was met with replies like. 'It was a blast, Stampf!'  'We did everything we could do', 'Was our turn'...etc... which always helps to releave the frustration at that time, and after reviewing and replaying the mission now a few times...that was indeed the case.  Short of flying South to Antarctica and never looking back...we did what we could do...and what we had to do, to get a fighting chance at least.  You guys simply...were up to the task...and soundly prevailed.

You certainly aided...in our immersion, and we shall endeavor to repay you in kind.

After all the victories as you've led JG-11 through, you should never apologize. The nights that don't go well make the nights that do go well even sweeter.
As many times as I've been on the receiving end of a JG-11 thumping I can say having a dangerous opponent is one reason the FSO is so fun. If there was
no competition and no danger of losing there would be no fun and no point in flying.

"we shall endeavor to repay you in kind."

It looks as if the fun will continue.  :aok
