Looking for a good 17th / 18th Century war game
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:15:07 AM »
I'm looking for a good strategy / war game along the same lines of Austerlitz or Rome total war. Anyone know of any games like this.  I've found Cossacks but don't know anything about it or if there are similar/better games out there.......I'm looking to channel my inner  Fredrick the Great / Napoleon  :D

Thanks in advance

i like the total war series but keep in mind they have been doing what every studio inevitably does, releasing unfinished product. empire and napolean had some game play issues, but i'm pretty sure the patches have fixed many issues. there are a ton of mods available.

Napoleon TW is actually pretty fun, and some of the Civil War mods are insane, with 10's of thousands of troops under your control.  It's cheap now too. That and Empire are pretty much the only ones I can think of.

Victoria 2 from Paradox is pretty good.

Although not totally in the time frame you mention, Europa Universalis 4 just came out.  I don't own it but am considering picking it up due to the good reviews it has been receiving.

Just trying to give TW:Rome 2 a good try before jumping to something else, even though it had a pretty crappy release.  :(

you have to let other people be the test rats...never buy on the initial release, i generally wait 6 months.

Agree completely, pretty much every other game I wait till it has been out for a bit before buying.  For both the price drop and all the patches to have been worked out.  But I was just too hopeful for this one.  It works pretty good on my system, none of the performance bugs, but it does seem a little hollow.

I used to love Empire total war but I have been having a lot of problems with crashes , reinstalled and now I cant even launch the game. I might look up Victoria 2, Paradox has a lot of stuff I like.

I have Napoleon Total War and enjoy that game a lot. The style of fighting sure is much different than that of Medieval 2 Total War.

Well i picked up Napoleon Total War ..... and the Rome Total War Anthology    Ive written down everyones suggestions and will at some point buy them all....(curse you EBAY!!!).....  Really appreciate all the suggestions gents....

Having never played any games like this.....what am i in for? is there a steep learning curve? not that it matters, but any help would be appreciated.

Funny thing that got me into this.....my company got me a new Iphone....and having to drive alot for work (and having a car that will allow me to plug in my iphone to the car speakers), ive gotten into listening to history Podcasts    like Mike Duncans "The History of Rome" and Zack Twamleys "When Diplomacy Fails" These guys are amazing. Mike Duncans Rome podcast is over 199 parts and takes you from the start to the end......He also just started one called "Revolutions" which is starting to be as amazing as his Rome project.  If you like Roman history....this is a must listen to show....just be aware that it will hook you in, and you will find yourself at every spare moment with your earbuds in your ears.......

When Diplomacy Fails is an ongoing podcast that is up to like 50 shows  (im only on show number 8 and he is still producing them) If you get a chance, check them out..... He is just awesome in telling the story of what happens diplomatically up to the outbreak of wars, and then goes thru the war and the outcomes of same...

Ive found a bunch of others....Like A history of Alexander.....and A history of Hannible (Jamie Redfern) that are phenomenal.....

The total war set was out on steam over a year ago for $50. I have only played 4 out of the 6 or 7 games that you got.

not a big learning curve but you will get your butt kicked by the ai armies a few times before you learn how to build and deploy effective armies...especially in the later stages of development.
