and the added "Re:" in the subject line pushed it past the 80 character limit.

Probably due to the screen limits of the first versions of internet BBSs.

Mainframes only allowed 80 char width.

If only people would realize that a subject line is meant to be short, and the body of the post is where they're supposed to write the details...
