The table that the piano built…
« on: October 29, 2013, 06:13:40 PM »
A while back I posted a set of photos detailing the refinishing of hardwood floor that we found under the old blue shag carpeting in my wife and daughter’s craft room.

Well, I was informed that such a nice room deserved better than the old folding table that they were using for their crafts… She wanted something with personality, like an antique harvest table… GAME ON!

Here is the donor… I brought this home from an auction for $5... Plus an 18 pack of beer for the two friends who helped unload it.  (A BARGAIN!)
I then scrapped the piano… Honestly the photo made it look better than it was. I saved all of the wood that I could, and recycled all of the metal.

Here is the base for the harvest table. All of the wood came from the piano.

In this photo I’ve glued on the 1X8 oak boards that I bought to make the top. The wood clamps are made out of scraps from the piano.

A view of the bottom…

And finally, a photo of the table after it was stained. All I need to do now is apply the varnish! (Oh yeah, and carry it into the house, transfer everything onto it… And carry out the old folding table… You get the idea…)

Not too bad for an old fart with cheap hand tools! (And I can ALWAYS use the points that this project is earning.)
CHEERS!

  Very nice!

Your bridging and bracing should make it last a long time.  I think it would have a cleaner look if you tapered the legs slightly but that is just a little thing... wood look beautiful!!!

Thank you! The legs are tapered, VERY slightly - ½ inch over the 28 inch length. Not by choice, this is just how the wood was cut to support the cast iron harp that the sound board was attached to.

As for the wood, I gave the original wood a single coat of stain, and the new wood on the top three coats of stain to match.

Now that you say it's tapered I can see it but just barely!   The stain looks great and I like how you repurposed some of the wood to make the clamps!   Brownie points just before Xmas.....Hmmm someone gonna be a happy boy. :devil
