The pictures were taken after the bomb had been defused.

I like the company name signs in the background. This company gets a little free advertisement from this find.

Bomb still buried there at the time this picture

was taken.

Must be an odd feeling to know you parked on a 4,000lbs bomb all that time...  :uhoh

was discovered by analyzing old aerial photographs

Is this something that is done regularly? What was the tip off that something might be there?

Is this something that is done regularly?

In many regions it is. In some, (Lower Saxony comes to my mind), it was stopped for financial reasons.

What was the tip off that something might be there?

My guess: An impact crater too small for an exploded bomb. Or something like that.

This thread is a good place to plug a book I've plugged before: [urlhttp://www.amazon.com/Aftermath-Remnants-Landmines-Warfare-The-Devastating/dp/067975153X][/url] you can get it from your library. Also if you get a chance to see this: http://www.bombhunters.com/ I recommend.

Ok I have to ask.....why did the put a blue tarp over the rear of the bomb?

Because they did not put a red tarp on it.   Duh.
