Excellent story, does indeed show that luck plays a big part in life..
To make it through that & testing F-104s - it killed so many pilots too.

The next day, our flight profile was duplicated on the SR-71 flight simulator at Beale AFB, Calif. The outcome was identical.

That should've been step one.

More than likely it was or the engineering numbers were indicative and thus a flight test was accomplished to see if the engineering data was accurate. But, since none of us were around to participate, just a guess as to the logic flow.
