Who went to the Masterton airshow? (kiwis only)
« on: January 28, 2001, 01:07:00 AM »
I went up to Masterton today to see "wings over Wiarapa" and got to see some of my favourite aircraft.
I dunno about the states, but to get a chance to see classic WW2 fighters in this country is a rare chance indeed!
There were:
P40-N Kittyhawk.
Harvards (6 of)
Hurricane Mk IIc
Spitfire Mk9.
P51-D Mustang.
C47 Dakota.
DeHavilland Vampire. (not WW2).

It was the first time i have actually seen a real P51-D mustang and witnessed it in person. The packard Merlin sounded *incredible* as it blasted past at 500 MPH   supercharger whining away - WOW! Real purposefull, brutish sound that makes all your hairs stand up on end.

The Spitty sounded incredible too (same engine - you'd expect that). And looked very nice indeed! A real sense of majesty to see it gracefully fly around at speed.

The P40 sounded more refined and smoother (Allison) than the mustang (Packard-Merlin).

I got some photos, and when i get them developed i will post them.

HTC - why cant we get sound like that!   At least you should be able to hear the planes zoom by when in the tower or in a vehicle - would be real nice!

Hi Spat, sounds like you had fun.
I didn't make it, Masterton is too far away for me.
Just out of interest a few months ago I seen a P51D sitting on the ground at Ardmore airport.I was too far away from it to get a good look at it, but I'm pretty sure it was in rnzaf colours.
It might be the same pony that was at the show since there can't be that many of them in NZ.

Are you sure the Spit9 flew at speed, the AH Spit9 is as slow as a wet Sunday... c'mon admit it,the pony was towing the Spit

Looking foward to your pics.I hope you got one of the P40

Yes, it was polished alloy but had the RNZAF markings

I believe its the only one in this country. You can fly it for $2000 (its been converted to a twin seater) from Wanaka. See www.biplane-adventures.co.nz
I would love to fly it.

Hehehehe... Yer, it was a bit slower but sounded good and looked much better than a photo can do justice.

Totally agreed Santa. About 3 years ago there was a 109 G6 at the Wanaka airshow. 1 of a few still flying. It wasnt part of the NZ warbirds collection so it is not part of our circuit   no axis planes are (its not a political thing just an availibility issue).

Would have loved to have seen it.

Someone at the show was talked about a ME 108 that lived in Auckland.

WTF is a 108 anyways?

Vulcan there is an ME108 in Auckland. It belongs to the NZ Historical Aircraft Society and is based at Ardmore airport.

Apparently the ME108 is the predecessor to the ME109 and about 1100 of them were built.
It's also a four seater, or at least the NZHAS's ME108 is.
