Most stable gun platform?
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:50:28 AM »

I was tooling around offline shooting drones yesterday in a variety of aircraft.  I started out in an Me-410 because I wanted to see to what degree using a light gun package would improve its handling.   I was surprised at the improvement in handling that resulted from choosing a light package.   I also concluded, unfortunately, that I would not want to fly the aircraft in the main arena because it seems to be so unstable when shooting.  What do you think are the most stable and least stable gun platforms?  I've never seen this discussed before.

Most stable (for me at any rate) is the Typhoon and the various versions of the Hurri.  Ta152 should also be a consideration.

Least to me is the Spit14...which is just a God awful bouncy thing.   :D

Agree regarding the Spit14 being among the worst - the Ta152 is a good platform too, I agree, except during certain low speeds, it can get the nose bouncing similar to the Spit14 as well.  If you're using it at mid to high alt and with decent smash/E, using the 152's strengths, it's stable like a table.

For 50 cal planes, the P47's can be pretty stable to shoot with I find as well.  The Chog isn't horrible either for 20mm, I don't find it that much worse than the Typhoon, plus you get more ammo, but less speed.  The 410 with the 30mm option shoots very flat and feels stable to me, as horrible as the airframe is for speed/turning/E retention/everything else/etc.

I would like to see what everyone thinks of this question from an air to ground perspective.  Example, Il2 vs Stuka with the pew pew pew's, the Hurri2D, B25H, and so on.

P38 has the most stable gun platform.
When I die bury me in a P38.

I watch day after day, week after week, tour after tour, the Bishops and Rooks take bases and win maps while the Knights stand there with their thumbs stuck in their butts. It's just pathetic!

Nothing I use in here is stable. My stick is pure bounce. If I kill you, its due to pure lead overdose, than anything else.

Hmm..... I say anything flying along at 250-300 TAS offers and very stable shooting platform.  However, the 190's, the Typhoon, the Mossi, and P47's all come to mind quickly.  F6F is nice too.

Interesting responses... I didn't mean AAA or bombers... Relative stability as a gun platform seems to be a neglected facet of aircraft evaluation/discussion.  I'm sure that part of the success of the P-38, in particular, is due to it being an extremely stable gun platform - even when turning.  The 410 also has all the guns in the nose, but doesn't seem at all stable unless there is absolutely no g-loading.  If I could just figure out how to make the P-38 dance like some do, then I'd fly it more often.

38 is the most stable.  The Typhoon is pretty solid too, but that's just because it can't move in the first place.  :)

It might not be the most unstable, but I've always found the 51 to be pretty jumpy for gunnery.

Dora is a lot more stable then the 152.

F6F is a smooth shooting platform but crap rear view.
