YB-40
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:20:43 AM »
For those who though killing a B-17 was already too hard enough: The YB-40. Also known as the "deathstar" B-17.

The thing did actually see service, but not for long. The extra guns and ammo made it unable to keep up with the rest of the formation. They only saw service from May '43 to October '43. It did not carry bombs. This was the idea for a bomber escort before the mustang.

Imagine trying to HO this thing...

Or come from the dead six  :uhoh

And they should have extended the wings and added two more engines. It may have not improved performance but it would have looked way cool!

It's nickname was the deathstar. Or atleast from what I've heard from some squaddies.  :salute

I doubt the chin turret of the YB-40 could hold 6 50cal machine guns.  From all accounts I've read, it held only two.  But, the chin turret was adopted by the B-17G to help counter frontal attacks.  The main problem with the YB-40, aside from being underpowered, was accuracy.  The guns already had a huge dispersion on regular B-17s.  Combine that with the massive vibration of multiple guns firing on a YB-40 and the problem multiples itself.

Not in real life it wasn't.  The nickname "Deathstar" was coined in Air Warrior for a fully manned B-17.

I would be surprised if that term was used before 1977...  :old:
