Today's Pic of my Grandfather next to the tank he drove but not the Cobra King I do not know what his tank's name was

Grandfathers Brother Pic's Brother was assigned to the Mine Sweeper ship USS Skill lost is life on Sept 25 1943 off coast of Italy while his Brother was on the Ground war with the 191st in Salerno

Your Grandpa may be familiar with two tanker terms:
1. DAT (Dumb prettythang Tanker)
2. "If you ain't CAV, you ain't toejam!"

Also, a tankers 4th General Order is:
"I will guard my tank from flank to flank and take no toejam from any rank."

I am a proud DAT (M60A3 and M1A1)

thanks but right now in my gramps Dementia and the war story talk is no more which I wished I pulled more facts and stories from him a  long time ago but waited to long now so my loss but still proud of him

<S> to your family.  Your Grandfather might have dementia but I hope it is possible you still have moments where he is lucid. If so, enjoy those moments.  They are few and fleeting.  Enjoy them for what they can give you as a family and if you want to ask about the past, do so after you have taken care of the present( his comfort) and the future (his wishes)!

What an awesome grandpa!

I hope you get some info though in general the information you have is an incredible legacy. There are geeks on these boards that could help you do some serious research to learn all kinds of things about your Grandpa through unit histories, combat logs, etc. His unit may even have some reunion or small web site. My Dad served on a heavy cruiser during the Korean War and shocking enough his cruiser has an official non-profit with an annual budget of $8,000. Just enough to print a 16-page magazine a couple times a year and have super small reunions. Maybe your Grandpa has some unknown connections like that. I'd love to hear more about his tanking history.

My grandpa left no relics behind him. He was covert ops during the war and he had to destroy all his logs in order to avoid getting them into soviet hands. A shame really, probably would have been a lot of interesting stuff there.

All he ever told about the war was some stories of fallen friends and a cool story about him playing cat and mouse with a soviet IL2.

Here ya go. I have posted this before, but since no one else is contributing...



This is my paternal Grandfather, Joe Hyman. He would receive the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Ardennes Area during the Battle of the Bulge. He carried Shrapnel in is arm as a reminder. Rarely spoke about the war except for certain things like "Bed-Check Charlie". Passed away in Dec 2001.

Here is one I don't think no one has seen yet.



This is my Maternal Grandfather, Woodrow Wilson Robinson. He is actually my Step-Grandfather, as my mom's real father bailed. He was a Military police man and arrived in Europe just as the war ended. Told lots of interesting post war occupation stories. Passed away in 2006.

This is my grandfather. The portrait was taken in 1937 I think while he was finishing up pre-flight school or possibly officers candidate school.
The next one is "Bubby" back in southern California with an F6F-3 in 1944 after getting the USS Princeton (CVL-23) blown out from under him. The last one he is piloting the lead ship in the picture, a Curtiss SB2C-4 Helldiver.



 



 



My sisters have many more photos than I do. I know they have pics of him in Vought SB2Us aboard the USS Lexington CV-2 sometime in 1939. And pics of him In Douglas SBDs around the 1941-43 time-frame. I need to get copies from them.

Salute to all who have Served.


After talking to my Uncle Today he is sending me pictures of Ledger pages from the book my Grandfather kept with all the Cities he was in during the War either where he fought or was camped during the battle. He also has it marked where his Brother is buried over in Italy. I will post them tomorrow when I get home from work.
