Tried to download and install on another computer...
« on: January 14, 2014, 08:57:29 PM »
...and I get this error message when I try to run the installer.
"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

That means the download is corrupt.  Any anti-xxxx software could cause this.  Norton is infamous for this.

Bull's Eye! Thanks. Now the question is...how do I get it to install? I tried shutting down everything I could find to shut down on Norton, still no dice. Can't just uninstall it, not my computer.

The problem you are going to have is the WEB browsers cache saying you have already downloaded it.  You need to purge your browser cache, make sure Norton is off, and then download the game again.

Completely uninstalled Norton. Deleted cache on browser time after time. Still get his error message when I try to download the latest version of the whole game. Trying to install from my disk and download the patches isn't working either!

Completely uninstalled Norton.
Did you use the Norton Removal Tool, https://support.norton.com/sp/fi/fi/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us? It's not fool proof, but does the job much better than the "normal" way to uninstall. Run the remover, reboot and preferably run a decent registry cleaner like Ccleaner after the reboot to get at least most of the remains removed.

I recall once uninstalling Norton successfully and installing another anti-virus instead. Half an hour later a pop-up window announced that "Norton firewall has prevented..." Not to mention searching through the registry to find the remains of a former anti-virus preventing the install of a new one. Sticky bastages they are!

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

There are no Norton messages coming up. There haven't been. The download seems to download just fine. The only problem is that I get that error message each and everytime.

More than likely your browser is simply installing the same cached download, over and over again.  Did you try clearing the browser cache?

Removing Norton is a pain, due to the damage it does to system files when it installs.

Try downloading a different version of the game (AH2322.EXE, AH2321.EXE, or AH2320.EXE).

If you get that message with all three, then something is still corrupting the download.  As the file is downloaded using TCPO, it should be fine as TCP includes checks for data corruption.  This implies the file corruption is coming from the attempt to run it.

Are you trying to run it from a hard drive or an SSD?  Are you running RAID?

Mentioning the message example may have been unnecessary and only add confusion. What I was trying to explain is, that although the removal via "Programs and features" seems to succeed without any sort of problems or warnings, there most certainly is much left of the program in question - not only Norton suffers from this, but it's among the worst.

So I suggest you to run the removal tool mentioned above. If it clearly says there's nothing to remove, then there isn't much left to be done to remove Norton completely except for manually searching through the Registry. Based on what I've experienced during the last decade or more, the tool will run through without questioning, though. In any case it won't do any harm whatsoever to your computer but it might help.

There's something you might want to do to the possibly damaged system files Skuzzy mentioned: Run a CheckDisk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7fAoskwUcM and an SFC /scannow http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/sfc-scannow.htm

Add/Remove from Windows DOES NOT undo the damage done by Norton when it was installed!  You have to run the tool Bizman linked in order to actually have a chance of correcting the damage done by Norton.

Once do that, then you have a chance.

Now I'm scared!  I want to clean up my system and flush everything but the game and a few files in hopes that it will improve game play.  It will require an Aces High download again.  Any tips on saving skins, points, seat position, stick settings?

Save your settings folder and put that into the new install. The only file you don't want to bring over in the settings file is the "video8.cfg" file. The game will build a new one the first time you run it.
