It could be overheating and dropping the clock rates to keep from burning up.  Not uncommon for a laptop.

Okay I'll raise it up a bit to improve cooling, hopefully that helps.

Could be clogged with dust?

Doesn't look like it, but I'll vacuum it just in case.

Make sure you know where the air intake and exhaust is, and ensure they are clean and clear of obstructions. Many laptop users inadvertently cover an intake just by using the laptop on their lap, and even worse sometimes on a towel or blanket because it "gets my legs too hot sitting directly on my lap".
My Current Rig:
GigaByte GA-X99-UD4 Mobo w/ 16Gb RAM
Intel i7 5820k, Win7 64-bit
NVidia GTX 970 4Gb ACX 2.0

I also use a laptop for AH, and I've always always always elevated it up off the table with at least a pencil under each edge.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

I raised the computer by about 3/4in and played a bit more, same problem. However I did notice that when the frame rate dropped it got rather warm.

I'll vacuum it tomorrow and see what else I can do to improve the cooling.

If I get one of those laptop cooling pads, do I need to get a specific one or either one will work?

I'm pretty sure I know which one is which, but what difference does it make? Either way both have to stay open.

I would suggest getting MSI Afterburner or GPUZ, left them running in background and play the game. When frame rate is low just swith back to that programs and check GPU temperature. Or better yes use Afterburner's overlay to constantly check video card's load, frame rate and temperature.

3M and other manufacturers sell adhesive bumpons which can be used to  raise the laptop. They are non-slippery, too, which can reduce the risk of pushing the laptop off the table. And they really make the laptop run cooler even with one pair at the hinge end of the bottom.

as skuzzy said it could be a case of frequency throttling due to over heating...try to monitor your gpu's temperature and frequency and see if it changes when the game slows down

I would add to this with a quick check of power management, most lappers are set to conserve battery life so make sure you turn off power manament or make a custom power setting that keeps full power when plugged into AC.

   YMMV.

PS:Those bumpers that Bizman showed will help however I go to the local hardware store and find much cheaper pads!

I recently got a new X52 and it came with 8 of those which I'm not using for it. So for now I put 4 of those under the computers, seems to help a bit but not enough.

I'll check it out.

Kinda concerned that it will slow down the computer a whole lot since it's barely handing AH as it is, but worth a test.

Just did that.
For some reason I thought that it was already set for maximum performance, it wans't.

Lucky you! I had to buy 1000 pieces of those (yes, a thousand) from our official 3M dealer, because the only equivalents found in local hw stores were the door knob bumpers with a hole in the middle and even those were hard to find as self adhesive. Every market had the screw-in versions... IMO the ball halves look more professinal, too, in the target in question!
